Teaching Excellence Award Recipient Dr. Paula Qualls Challenges Community to ‘Cultivate Good Soil’ While University Honors Top Students and Scholars

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The �� community celebrated the formal opening of the academic year with Fall Convocation on Aug. 19. Led by Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Nicole Waters, the program celebrated scholastic achievement, recognized scholarship recipients and featured remarks by Professor of Religious Studies Dr. Paula Qualls, the 2025 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award.

After the invocation by Vice President for Christian Life and Service and University Chaplain Dr. Josh Parrott, Waters opened the ceremony by introducing the deans of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Robert Prickett; Godbold College of Business, Dr. Mischia Taylor; College of Education, Dr. Prince Bull; and College of Health Sciences, Dr. Tracy Arnold. After the introductions, Waters noted. “Together, these colleges represent the breadth and depth of our university’s academic life. Their faculty will teach you, mentor you, and model what it means to live out your calling. May your time within these colleges spark curiosity, inspire innovation, and guide you in using your God-given talents to serve a greater purpose.”

�� President Nate Evans introduced Qualls, who also won the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2008. The recognition represents the highest honor bestowed upon a �� faculty member and is especially meaningful because it reflects the voices of both colleagues and students.

Qualls has served �� for 26 years. “Her students describe her with words such as compassionate, encouraging, positive and inspiring,” Evans shared. “They speak of a professor who makes difficult material meaningful, creates a welcoming environment for learning, and takes the time to know and care for each student as an individual. Perhaps the greatest testament to her work, however, is found in the students who describe themselves as changed by her influence—not only as learners, but as people.”

Qualls began her speech by reflecting on memorable teachers portrayed in films such as “Dead Poets Society,” “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” and “School of Rock,” noting that great teachers recognize potential, inspire growth, and help students become their best selves. She said these stories resonate because impactful teachers communicate a powerful message to their students: “You have value. You have potential. I believe in you. You matter.” Qualls then connected those examples to what she described as the greatest teacher of all, Jesus Christ, whose teachings have transformed countless lives throughout history and continue to challenge people to change how they think, live, and serve others.

Using Jesus’ Parable of the Sower from Matthew 13, Qualls urged members of the �� community to nurture their spiritual, intellectual, physical, and social well-being through prayer, learning, healthy habits, and meaningful relationships. She reminded students that a new academic year offers an opportunity for a fresh start and challenged them to make the most of their time and potential. “We can all cultivate good soil and be transformed,” she noted. “We can make choices to have a good year, to make every day count. Carpe Diem… Seize the day, friends. Make your lives extraordinary. Cultivate good soil. Run the risk, and gain everything!”

After Qualls’ address, members of the University Concert Choir, directed by Associate Professor of Music Dr. Joshua Cheney, led the audience in singing the �� alma mater. The convocation also highlighted ��’s commitment to academic excellence, Christian faith, and student integrity. The ceremony opened with an invocation by Dr. Josh Parrott, vice president for Christian Life and Service and University chaplain, and included the presentation of the University’s Honor Code by Student Body President Bethany Durham. Academic achievement was recognized by Waters through the presentation of Scholastic Academic Awards, which honor students with the highest GPAs after one, two and three years of study, while Evans recognized recipients of ��’s premier scholarships.

Maxie Claire Canipe of Shelby, N.C., is the winner of the Belk-Ellis Scholarship, which is awarded to a student from Cleveland or Rutherford County who has demonstrated high academic achievement and plans to pursue a major in business.

Searight Leadership: Jairus Battle and Addie Yates

Jairus Battle is recognized as a recipient of the Searight
Leadership award by GWU President Nate Evans.

Jairus Battle of Rock Hill, S.C., and Addie Yates of Kings Mountain, N.C., are recipients of the Searight Leadership Award, which supports first-generation college students who have demonstrated exceptional leadership potential.

R.W. Andrews: Jaylon Smith

Jaylon Smith of Shelby, N.C., is the winner of the R. W. Andrews Scholarship, which is awarded to a male student from Cleveland County. Recipients of this scholarship demonstrate integrity, leadership, and academic success while exemplifying the mission and values of ��.

Godbold: Josie Blanton

Josie Blanton of Shelby, is the recipient of the Godbold Scholarship, which is a full-tuition scholarship established by John and Linda Godbold. It is awarded to a student of high academic standing who plans to pursue a major in business.

This distinguished scholarship provides full tuition, room and board for eight semesters. �� Welcomes New Faculty for 2026-27 Academic Year

Nine New Faculty Members Bring Expertise in Healthcare, Business, Public Service, Technology, and the Sciences to the University

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� welcomed nine new faculty members during its annual Faculty Assembly on Aug. 11. Representing a range of academic disciplines and professional backgrounds, the new faculty bring expertise in healthcare, business, public service, technology, scientific research, and higher education. Their arrival marks the beginning of the 2026-27 academic year and strengthens the University’s commitment to academic excellence and student success.

Introduced by their respective college deans during Faculty Assembly, the new faculty members represent the College of Arts and Sciences, Godbold College of Business, and College of Health Sciences. Their professional experience includes leadership in academia, clinical practice, military service, public administration, scientific research, and industry partnerships.

“One of our ONE WEBB core values is to be student focused,” said Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Nicole Waters during Faculty Assembly. “Our students are the heart of this University, and together across every college, school, and discipline, we share the collective purpose of serving them well.”

College of Arts and Sciences

Dr. Tyler Thomas

Dr. Tyler Thomas joins �� as assistant professor of computer science. He earned his Ph.D. in Computing and Information Systems, along with his master’s and bachelor’s degrees, from the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Before coming to ��, Thomas served on the faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Stout, where he earned tenure and promotion to associate professor in 2024. His teaching and research interests include software engineering, cybersecurity, secure coding, artificial intelligence, network security, and information technology infrastructure. He joins �� with a desire to serve at a Christ-centered university closer to his hometown of Gastonia, N.C.

Dr. Christina Johnson

Joining the Department of Biology as assistant professor, Dr. Christina Johnson earned a Ph.D. in Botany from Miami University and a bachelor’s degree in Genetics and Plant Biology from the University of California, Berkeley. Her career has combined biological research, higher education, and science education, including work on NASA-funded initiatives and postdoctoral research at Kennedy Space Center. Johnson has taught biology and environmental science courses and is committed to mentoring students while developing STEM educational resources for learners of all ages.

Dr. Robert Roth

Dr. Robert Roth joins the University as associate professor of criminal justice. Roth earned a Doctor of Education and Educational Specialist degree in Educational Leadership from Liberty University, a Master of Science in Criminal Justice from West Chester University, and a Bachelor of Arts in Criminal Justice from Bloomsburg University. He previously served at Montreat College, where he held multiple academic leadership positions, including department chair and interim associate dean. Prior to entering higher education, Roth served in law enforcement as both a police officer and deputy sheriff in Pennsylvania, experience that continues to inform his teaching and scholarship.

Dr. Jessica Casimir

Dr. Jessica Casimir joins �� as assistant professor of sociology and chair of the Department of Social Sciences. She earned her Ph.D. in Sociology from the University of Florida, a Master of Applied Social Science from Florida A&M University, and a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Florida A&M. Casimir comes from Western Carolina University and has also served at UNC-Asheville, East Carolina University, and the University of Cape Town’s AIDS & Society Research Unit. Her research focuses on global health, chronic illness, healthcare access, aging populations, and health inequities, particularly in South Africa.

Dr. Andrew Dunphy

An assistant professor of biology, Dr. Andrew Dunphy earned a Ph.D. in Biology with a concentration in Immunology and Microbiology from UNC-Charlotte. He also holds master’s and bachelor’s degrees from UNC-Greensboro. During his graduate studies, Dunphy taught courses in biology, anatomy and physiology, ecology, and microbiology while conducting research on host-pathogen interactions, neuroinflammation, and immune signaling. His scholarly work has resulted in multiple peer-reviewed publications and presentations and has earned recognition at regional and university research competitions.

Dr. Michael Meissner

Dr. Michael Meissner joins the Department of Public Service as assistant professor. He completed his Doctor of Public Administration at Liberty University and also holds degrees from ��, Converse College, the University of South Carolina Upstate, and the Community College of the Air Force. Meissner brings experience in military leadership, public service, and higher education. Many members of the �� community already know him through his previous service as director of the Military Science program, adjunct instructor, and student mentor. Most recently, he has served as a U.S. Army Reserve exercise planner and probation officer for the State of North Carolina.

Godbold College of Business

Dr. Wayne Durr

Dr. Wayne Durr joins the Godbold College of Business as assistant professor of finance. A U.S. Army veteran, Durr holds a Doctor of Business Administration with a concentration in Finance and an MBA with a concentration in Supply Chain and Operations. His professional experience spans Fortune 500 companies, startups, government contracting, entrepreneurship, and higher education. Throughout his career, he has supported projects involving NASA, the Department of Defense, the Department of Energy, NOAA, and the U.S. Space Force. In addition to teaching, he works as a business consultant and corporate finance coach, assisting organizations and entrepreneurs with financing, business planning, and operational strategy.

College of Health Sciences

Judy Dover

Judy Dover joins the Hunt School of Nursing as instructor of nursing. She earned a Master of Science in Nursing Education from East Carolina University, a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Winston-Salem State University, and an Associate Degree in Nursing from Caldwell Community College. Dover brings nearly 40 years of nursing and healthcare leadership experience, most recently serving as program coordinator and instructor for nurse aide programs at Cleveland Community College. Her professional background includes leadership roles in hospice care, long-term care, acute care nursing, and healthcare education. �� holds special significance for Dover as both of her daughters are graduates of the Hunt School of Nursing.

Dr. Yvonne Smith

Dr. Yvonne Smith returns to �� as associate professor of nursing. She earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice from ��, a Master of Science in Nursing from UNC-Greensboro, and completed Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner preparation at Anderson University. Smith previously served eight years as a graduate faculty member in the Hunt School of Nursing and played an instrumental role in developing the Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner program. Her career includes decades of experience in psychiatric and mental health nursing, nursing education, school health, and advanced practice nursing. During her previous tenure at ��, she received numerous honors, including the Outstanding Graduate Faculty Award, DAISY Faculty Award, Mentoring and Advising Faculty Award, and Excellence in Teaching Award.

As �� begins a new academic year, these faculty members bring diverse academic backgrounds, professional accomplishments, and a shared commitment to educating, mentoring, and serving students in a Christ-centered learning environment.

Faculty Awards, New Faculty Introductions, and a Vision for ‘ONE Webb’ Mark the Start of the 2026-27 Academic Year

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� celebrated excellence in teaching, scholarship, service, and mentorship during its annual Faculty Assembly on Aug. 11. Leading the list of honorees was Dr. Jeff Hartman, professor and internship coordinator in the Department of Exercise Science, who received the University’s highest faculty honor, the Excellence in Teaching Award. The annual gathering also welcomed new faculty members and marked the beginning of the 2026-27 academic year.

Held in the Tucker Student Center, the assembly brought faculty together for worship, professional development, recognition of outstanding achievement, and a shared commitment to student success.

“As full-time faculty members, you are entrusted with educating and supporting our students,” said Dr. Nicole Waters, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs. “Through your teaching, mentoring, advising, and service, you help prepare them to use their God-given talents in their personal and professional lives.”

Reflecting ��’s commitment to being Christ-centered, the Faculty Assembly began with a devotion from Dr. Jim McConell, interim dean of the School of Divinity. Members of the Faculty Assembly Choir, under the direction of Dr. Cal Robertson, professor of biblical studies, led faculty and staff in a worship song and also offered a choral selection. Accompaniment was provided by Robertson on the guitar and Timothy Scruggs, �� Department of Music staff accompanist.

During his presidential address, �� President Nate Evans highlighted the University’s progress over the past year, discussed key institutional priorities, and outlined a vision for the future. Framed by the theme “ONE Webb,” his remarks emphasized ��’s commitment to being Christ-Centered, Student-Focused, and Excellence-Driven.

“I am excited to begin a new academic year and grateful for the faculty who make the �� experience so meaningful,” Evans said. “Their investment in our students is central to who we are, and I look forward to what we will accomplish together as ONE Webb.”

Excellence in Teaching Award – Dr. Jeff Hartman

The Excellence in Teaching Award was presented to Dr. Jeff Hartman, professor and internship coordinator in the Department of Exercise Science. Considered one of ��’s most prestigious faculty honors, the award recognizes exceptional teaching, academic rigor, innovation, mentorship, and commitment to the University’s mission.

Faculty members must have completed at least five years of full-time teaching service at �� to be eligible for the award. Candidates are nominated by peers, endorsed by their department chair, and evaluated through feedback and scoring from both faculty and students. The recipient also receives a $1,000 cash prize and the opportunity to address the University community during fall convocation.

Hartman was recognized for helping students connect classroom learning to professional practice while mentoring students in research and scholarship. He has guided eight exercise science students in publishing scholarly articles as undergraduates and has played a significant role in preparing students for internships and professional careers through experiential learning opportunities.

Scholarship Faculty Award – Dr. Josh Vadeboncoeur

The Scholarship Faculty Award was presented to Dr. Josh Vadeboncoeur, assistant professor of sport management. The award recognizes excellence in research and scholarly contribution through publication, presentations, grant activity, and professional recognition.

Vadeboncoeur’s scholarship focuses on motorsports and the intersections of culture and race. His 2025 book, “Racing to Make Space: Black Fans in NASCAR’s Fast Lane,” along with numerous peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations, has established him as a growing voice in sport management scholarship.

Etta Curtis and J.D. Huggins Faculty Service Award – Dr. David Campbell

The Etta Curtis and J.D. Huggins Faculty Service Award was awarded to Dr. David Campbell, professor of geology.

Campbell was recognized for his sustained service to the University. During his five-year tenure as chair of the Department of Natural Sciences, Campbell helped guide the creation of a new biochemistry major, led the department’s five-year review process, and supported curriculum improvements. Beyond campus, he has shared his expertise through science education initiatives, international paleontology presentations, fossil identification workshops, and astronomy events that engage students and community members alike.

Mentoring and Academic Advising Faculty Award – Dr. LaDonna Clark

The Mentoring and Academic Advising Faculty Award was presented to Dr. LaDonna Clark, assistant professor, principal faculty member, and director of clinical education in the Department of Physician Assistant (PA) Studies.

In addition to advising graduate PA students, Clark mentors aspiring healthcare professionals through outreach programs, health fairs, and educational events. As director of the program’s Capstone course, she helps students develop skills in research, evidence-based medicine, scientific communication, and professional presentation that prepare them for successful healthcare careers.

The honor reflects Clark’s student-centered approach to advising and mentorship, her commitment to supporting graduate and pre-physician assistant students, and the professional development opportunities she creates through healthcare outreach and experiential learning.

Nancy Francis-Gregg Day Adjunct Award – Jessica Sherman

The Nancy Francis-Gregg Day Adjunct Award was awarded to Jessica Sherman, adjunct clinical instructor in the Hunt School of Nursing.

Sherman was recognized for creating a supportive clinical learning environment where students gain confidence while developing critical nursing skills. Student evaluations reflected her impact, with students praising her individualized feedback, encouragement, and commitment to helping future nurses transition successfully from the classroom to professional practice. Specifically, students cited her ability to build confidence and strengthen clinical skills.

Rising Star Faculty Award – Dr. Angel Queen

The Rising Star Faculty Award was presented to Dr. Angel Queen, assistant professor and chair of undergraduate nursing programs in the Hunt School of Nursing.

Queen was honored for exceptional promise and achievement in teaching, scholarship, service, and leadership. She has emerged as a leader within the Hunt School of Nursing through her work in curriculum development, student retention initiatives, scholarship, and community engagement. Among her accomplishments is the creation of NURS 200: Nursing Essentials, a course designed to strengthen student success and support nursing students throughout their academic journey.

Graduate Faculty Awards

Adjunct Award – Dr. Kristen Edwards

The Graduate Faculty Award for Adjunct Faculty was presented to Dr. Kristin Edwards, instructor in the Master of Arts in Instructional Technology program. Students consistently praised Edwards for her exceptional organization, clear communication, timely feedback, and unwavering commitment to helping them succeed.

Through her teaching, Edwards has earned a reputation for creating a supportive and well-structured learning environment that helps graduate students navigate complex coursework while balancing professional and personal responsibilities. Students highlighted her responsiveness, attention to detail, and dedication to helping them achieve their academic goals, describing her as a faculty member who invests deeply in their success.

Faculty Award – Dr. Denise Patterson

The Graduate Faculty Award was presented to Dr. Denise Patterson of the College of Education. Students commended Patterson for challenging them to excellence while providing mentorship, encouragement, and practical preparation for leadership roles beyond the classroom.

Students cited Patterson’s ability to connect theory to professional practice, helping them apply what they learn in meaningful ways both within and beyond their current roles. They also praised her mentorship and supportive approach, noting her commitment to preparing graduate students to become effective leaders and educators while maintaining high academic expectations.

One Question at a Time: �� 2026 Alumna Turns Internship into Career

Curiosity and Initiative Helped Mollie Fuller Secure a Full-Time Position with Metrolina Greenhouses

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Mollie Fuller has a piece of advice for �� students completing an internship. She shares two simple words that can make a lasting difference: “Ask questions.”

Fuller explained, “Employers truly want to see effort and initiative from interns to see if they will be a good full-time employee. A go-getter attitude is important to show that you are willing and able to learn.”

The 2026 GWU alumna speaks from experience. During her 2025 internship at Metrolina Greenhouses in Huntersville, N.C., she immersed herself in an unfamiliar industry, sought out opportunities to contribute, and made an impression on her supervisors. By the end of the internship, those efforts led to a full-time job offer.

“My manager started mentioning full-time opportunities towards the end of my internship,” Fuller noted. “Thankfully, I was able to stay on part time throughout my final year at �� and then transition to full time a few weeks after graduation.”

Fuller applied for the internship knowing very little about the horticulture industry but willing to expand her knowledge. As a retail marketing intern, she worked with a major retail account, updating product listings to ensure accuracy. “I even helped out in the greenhouse some,” she noted. “Overall, my internship was not the same thing every day, and I really enjoyed that.”

One of her most challenging projects was an analysis of Metrolina’s online items. Completing the tedious task helped shape future marketing strategy.

Now employed as Metrolina’s retail marketing coordinator, she is responsible for digital product content and search engine optimization, support and execution of marketing campaigns, and cross-functional collaboration. She knew about a week into her internship that she would enjoy working there full time. “The people are extremely kind and helpful,” she described. “I have never been afraid to ask questions. It is a very welcoming environment that is truly special when looking for a great workplace.”

While working in horticulture is new to Fuller, she was prepared for the marketing aspects of her job by her professors in the Godbold College of Business. “�� gave me a great foundation in Microsoft Office and really helped with soft skills like communication and problem-solving skills that are useful in any career field,” she reflected. “�� staff and faculty truly want every student to succeed. I loved my professors and appreciated how much they genuinely care about all students’ success.”

Beyond the classroom, Fuller built confidence through opportunities such as ��’s Career Fair, where she practiced introducing herself to employers and discussing her future goals. “I have always been introverted, but the Career Fair helped me to become more comfortable with talking to employers and be confident in myself when looking for internships,” she shared.

Curiosity also brought Fuller to ��. A native of Indian Trail, N.C., she received mail from GWU when she was in high school and came to check it out. “I instantly felt welcomed and a sense of peace when I first toured the campus,” she described. “I really liked the idea of a small campus and small class sizes.”

Arriving at GWU, Fuller explored several options before settling on a major in marketing with a minor in economics and finance. “I decided on marketing, because I really enjoyed my general education business classes and the professors in the College of Business,” she said.

Fuller said her business professors gave her a solid foundation to build her career, and the mentorship of Micah Martin, director of the Center for Personal and Professional Development, helped her obtain her first job. “I worked for him in the Career Center during my senior year,” she noted. “During that time, I learned a lot about communication, hirable skills, and of course resumes.”

Beyond helping her prepare professionally, Fuller said �� influenced how she approaches her work. “��’s focus on faith helped me learn how to put faith into practice in the workplace,” she reflected. “Most people think that work and faith have to be separated, but that is not true. �� taught me to lead with my faith and let success follow.”

She is excited about her future with Metrolina Greenhouses. “They have given me many opportunities to learn about the horticulture industry and see everything from production to sales to photography to shipping and so much more,” Fuller shared. “I love learning new parts of the industry and hope to continue to learn more. There is so much more to plants than one would think.”

For students preparing for internships of their own, her message remains simple: ask questions, seek opportunities to learn, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone.

Lydia Robinson’s Journey Includes Division I Soccer, Study Abroad in England and a Competitive Novant Health Internship While Completing Bachelor’s and MBA Degrees in Four years

Looking at Lydia Robinson’s résumé, it would be easy to assume luck played a role in her success. The �� student-athlete from Charlotte, N.C., plays Division I soccer and is on track to earn both her bachelor’s degree and MBA in four years. She studied abroad at Liverpool Hope University in England, where she practiced with a semi-professional soccer program and traveled to 11 countries. She also was selected for Novant Health’s Ignite Internship Program within the Chief of Staff Department.

However, Robinson doesn’t view any of those accomplishments as luck. They are the result of a philosophy that guides her choices. “I always say, ‘Have everlasting goals,’” she shared. “That’s always key for me. Always have everlasting goals, because in my mind, you only have one life and you want to do it to your best ability. Take those opportunities, take those risks.”

Robinson’s willingness to put herself out there helped shape her �� experience from the beginning. She hadn’t planned to play soccer in college, but as her high school career came to an end, she realized she wasn’t ready to leave the game behind. She had already decided to attend GWU because of the close-knit campus, but decided to take a chance and contact the women’s soccer coach. She thought to herself, “What’s the worst that can happen? He can say no.”

The gamble paid off. The coach was looking for a fourth goalkeeper. After looking into her impressive record, he invited Robinson to join the team. What began as a simple email became an opportunity to compete at the Division I level while earning her degree.

She began her �� journey in Fall 2024 with plans to graduate a year early. Dual-enrollment courses and Advanced Placement classes completed in high school provided a strong start, while summer coursework allowed her to stay on track without carrying an overwhelming course load during the academic year.

Robinson also enrolled in ��’s Accelerated Master’s Program, which allows qualified students to begin earning graduate credit while completing their bachelor’s degree requirements. She is a member of the University Honors Program, a former Congressman of Honors District HAPY and a member of Delta Mu Delta, the International Business Honor Society.

Her academic path, however, wasn’t always clear. Robinson entered as a biology major on the pre-med track with plans to attend physician assistant school or medical school. While she enjoyed helping others, she soon realized direct patient care wasn’t for her.

While exploring other options, she discovered healthcare management, which allowed her to help people through leadership and decision-making. “I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, that would be perfect because it’s the best of both worlds,’” Robinson reflected.

After choosing her major, Robinson turned her attention to fulfilling another longtime goal. For years, Robinson had envisioned studying abroad. In Spring 2026, that dream became reality when she traveled to Liverpool Hope University in England.

Before selecting a destination, Robinson researched the countries available through ��’s study abroad partnerships. Liverpool ultimately stood out because of its strong soccer culture, convenient location for travel throughout Europe, and connections through a teammate whose family lives there. When a different teammate learned of her plans to study abroad, she decided to join her.

The experience exceeded her expectations. While completing coursework abroad, Robinson traveled throughout Europe, visiting countries including Scotland, Ireland, Spain, Hungary, France, Poland, and others. She learned how to navigate trains and buses, budget carefully and adapt to unfamiliar environments.

“The amount of independence and maturity I feel like I gained was game changing,” she affirmed. Her mother even noticed the change and complimented her new level of confidence.

The semester abroad also gave Robinson a chance to play soccer in in a place where the sport is woven into everyday life. She joined Liverpool Hope University’s football club, and her teammate received an opportunity to play for Everton Football College. The Everton coach invited Robinson to goalkeeper practice. Training overseas exposed Robinson to a faster style of play and she learned new techniques that she plans to carry into her final collegiate season.

While there, another opportunity unexpectedly presented itself. Knowing she would be entering her senior year early, Robinson began searching for internships. One day, from her room in England, she opened LinkedIn and started submitting applications.

Within days, she received a message from Novant Health in Charlotte regarding its Ignite Internship Program. The 12-week internship rotates students through departments across the healthcare system, including communications, marketing, finance, human resources, community health and patient experience.

She participated in a virtual interview and was accepted for the program that started in June. The experience has expanded Robinson’s understanding of healthcare administration while helping her build valuable professional connections.

The internship has also reinforced lessons she learned in her business classes at ��. Robinson pointed specifically to professional communication skills and networking opportunities as areas where classroom experiences have translated into the workplace.

“Every single time I’m on a new Zoom call or meet a new person, I have to redo this elevator pitch pretty much being like, ‘Hi, I’m Lydia. I go to ��, majoring this, I want to do this,’” she said. “So that definitely helped me.”

Throughout her internship this summer, Robinson has carefully recorded names and professional contacts, later connecting with many of them through LinkedIn. One of the people she connected with posted about an internship opportunity for this fall, so she applied. “You never know where it could go,” she noted, expressing an interest in the program.

Whether pursuing an accelerated degree plan, studying abroad, walking onto a collegiate soccer team or gaining career experience in an internship program, Robinson believes growth begins with a willingness to try. “I’ve gained so many things in life from just putting myself out there,” she stated.

For Robinson, each accomplishment isn’t a finish line—it’s simply another step toward her next “everlasting goal.”

Linda Thornhill’s Work in Artificial Intelligence and Economics Shapes Student Learning While Gaining International Recognition from Academic Peers

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—When Linda Thornhill began ��’s Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) program in Summer 2024, she wasn’t just pursuing a doctorate—she was looking for a way to grow as an educator. Less than two years later, that decision is already transforming her teaching, opening doors to research and collaboration, and earning national recognition.

Thornhill, a business instructor at SOWELA Technical Community College in Lake Charles, La., was recently named the Louisiana Association of Business Educators (LABE) Postsecondary Teacher of the Year—an achievement she said caught her completely off guard.

At the same time, her academic work gained attention beyond the classroom. Thornhill recently presented a concept plan at the Academy of Business Research (ABR), an international society that brings together scholars and practitioners from across the United States and nearly 50 countries. Although it was a proposal, “AI in Human Resources: From HR to the Future of Work–The Revolution is Here,” won the best paper award. The work has since been edited and published .

For Thornhill, the DBA experience is not separate from her classroom—it actively shapes her instruction. The research-intensive nature of the program requires her to stay up-to-date with the latest developments, particularly within the past five years. “If I see something in my research and I know it goes with a specific lesson, I’ll go in and I’ll update that lesson,” she explained. “Or if I miss putting it into the PowerPoint, I bring it into the lecture.”

This approach has changed how her students engage with course material, and this has been one of the most rewarding outcomes of the DBA program. Instead of passively receiving information, they are increasingly taking ownership of their learning. “The ones that actually listen to the lecture and take it more to heart, they’re the ones that are starting to dive in a little bit even on their own,” she observed.

Her students now return to class with their own discoveries, building on classroom discussions. “They’ll come back into the class for the next class period and say, ‘Hey, remember how you told us this was going on? Did you know this is going on?’” Thornhill stated. “It kind of gets them more involved in taking a little bit of ownership of their education.”

Being in the DBA program has also reshaped how Thornhill relates to her students. As both instructor and student, she brings empathy, and credibility, into the classroom. “Once they know that I’m a student too, it kind of like changes their perspective a little bit,” she shared. “They are like, ‘OK, she does understand. She gets it.’”

The rigor of the DBA program has been demanding, but she embraces the challenge and enjoys researching and compiling information. Thornhill’s scholarship reflects her dual focus on theory and practice.

Her award-winning and now-published research explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and human resource management. The work examines both the potential benefits of AI and the risks of unintended bias. Thornhill highlights how AI is reshaping the workforce—not simply replacing jobs, but changing the nature of work. She emphasizes the importance of maintaining human oversight in AI systems. “You have to have that human element to keep it in check… otherwise you’re going to end up with biases in there,” she commented. “When it comes to repairing them and keeping machines running… you have to have a human.”

Presenting her research at the ABR conference marked another milestone. Thornhill described the experience as both exciting and intimidating. The presentation led to new opportunities for collaboration, including interest from international scholars.

As Thornhill advances in the DBA program, she is turning her attention to her dissertation in economics. Her research focuses on the economic impact of data centers—an increasingly relevant topic as digital infrastructure expands. She is particularly interested in the long-term effects on local communities, including job creation, economic spillover, and infrastructure costs. Her work will explore whether data centers generate sustained economic growth or provide only short-term benefits. She is also examining broader implications, including energy consumption and cost distribution.

Thornhill said choosing ��’s DBA program has been instrumental in her growth. The program’s flexibility and supportive faculty have made it possible for her to balance teaching, research, and professional commitments.

As she continues toward her expected graduation in May 2027, Thornhill is already seeing the impact of her work—both in her classroom and in the broader academic community. For her students, that impact is immediate. For Thornhill, it is a reminder of why she started the journey in the first place: to become not just a better scholar, but a better teacher.

�� Mourns the Passing of Dr. Earl H. Godfrey Jr. on May 7

Known for His Faith, Storytelling, and Dedication to Students, Professor Emeritus of Accounting Served the University for Over Three Decades

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The �� community is remembering Dr. Earl H. Godfrey Jr., an educator, colleague and friend, who passed away on May 7, 2026. For more than three decades, Godfrey faithfully served the University as a professor of accounting. In March, faculty in the Godbold College of Business recommended him for Professor Emeritus Status, and he was awarded the honor for his excellence in teaching, leadership, and service.

“He was a friend and colleague who truly loved everything about �� and the Godbold College of Business,” reflected Dr. Mischia Taylor, Godbold College of Business dean and assistant professor of marketing. “His many ‘short’ stories will remain with us always. He was kind to all and truly wore his GWU hat proudly!”

Taylor, who worked with Godfrey for 16 years, said he was known for his storytelling. In the letter she wrote recommending him for Emeritus status, she noted, “He possessed a remarkable ability to communicate with clarity and purpose. Even when his stories were lengthy, they were always thoughtful, intentional, and ultimately meaningful to all who had the privilege of listening.”

A graduate of the University of South Carolina, Winthrop University, and Nova Southeastern University, Godfrey brought both scholarly rigor and professional expertise into the classroom as a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) and Chartered Global Management Accountant (CGMA). During his 34 years at ��, he taught virtually every course within the accounting program. He also played a pivotal role in the development of the Master of Accounting program, which continues to prepare and graduate successful students.

Taylor also stated that Godfrey’s passion for education was unmistakable. He approached his calling with a deep sense of purpose—believing that teaching was not only about imparting knowledge but also about shaping lives.

Godfrey’s strong commitment to students and his colleagues was also deeply appreciated by Dr. Anthony Negbenebor, professor of economics and international business and assistant vice president for Business Development and Partnerships. Having worked with Godfrey for more than 20 years, he admired his steadfast dedication. “Dr. Godfrey’s commitment went far beyond the call of duty,” Negbenebor affirmed. “Whether in the classroom, the office, or informal moments of mentorship, he inspired those around him with a passion for learning and an unwavering belief in the potential of every student. Countless individuals have benefitted from his guidance, encouragement, and the genuine care he brought to every interaction.”

Godfrey was instrumental in expanding opportunities for students, including helping lead the University’s transition into online education, where he taught its first online course and helped establish programs that would reach students far beyond campus. His contributions helped position �� as a forward-thinking institution committed to innovation and accessibility in higher education.

His influence extended beyond the classroom. He served in numerous leadership roles, including director of Undergraduate Business Programs, director of Online Learning, and director of business programs for adult learners, helping to expand academic offerings across North Carolina and beyond. He also played a key role in accreditation efforts and served in leadership positions within the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP), including international service as treasurer and committee chair. These efforts reflected his unwavering commitment to academic quality, institutional growth, and student success.

Negbenebor also valued Godfrey’s experience and insight. “To colleagues, Dr. Godfrey was more than a collaborator—he was a pillar of support, always ready to share insight, lend a hand, or simply offer a listening ear,” he observed. “His warmth, humor, and wisdom created a professional family that will feel the loss deeply.”

In the classroom, he was an educator who exemplified a rare blend of rigor, humility, and compassion. “He held high expectations for his students but paired those expectations with patience, encouragement, and genuine care,” Taylor stated. “He was deeply invested in their success, often mentoring students long after they left his classroom. His mentorship extended far beyond graduation, shaping careers and lives.”

A respected scholar and professional, Godfrey remained actively engaged in his field through teaching, research, and professional service. His work in areas such as accounting ethics, educational innovation, and student learning outcomes reflected a lifelong commitment to growth and improvement. His excellence was recognized through numerous awards, including ��’s Graduate Faculty Member of the Year and multiple honors for teaching, research, and service.

Beyond his many achievements, the faculty in the Godbold College of Business remember him most for his character. Taylor said he was a man of deep faith, integrity, and compassion, who gave generously of his time and energy to serve others. His colleagues recalled his wisdom, his willingness to help, and his ability to bring people together with a spirit of unity and purpose.

Godfrey’s enduring impact is evident in the generations of students he guided through his teaching, leadership, and mentorship. Negbenebor added that his legacy lives not only in achievements recorded or milestones celebrated, but in the countless lives he touched and the spirit he instilled. “He reminded us that true dedication is measured not just by what we do, but by the love, patience, and integrity we bring to every endeavor,” Negbenebor asserted. “I honor Dr. Godfrey not only for his extraordinary contributions but for the kindness, generosity, and humanity that defined his life and work. He will forever remain a guiding light in our hearts and in the halls of the Godbold College of Business.”

Above all, Godfrey was devoted to his family. He is survived by his beloved wife of 33 years, Joan; his son, Ryan Kyles; his daughter, Jennifer Spencer and husband Chad; his grandchildren, Sydnee, Kellan, Harper, and Julian; and his sister, Ann G. Shirley.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to ��’s Godbold College of Business in memory of Dr. Earl Godfrey.

Alumnus and National Security Expert Patrick Woody Challenges Graduates to Stay ‘FIRED’ for Lifelong Growth and Service

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� celebrated the achievements of over 500 graduates on May 8 in Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center. Traditional undergraduate students were honored at 9 a.m., with graduates from master’s and doctoral programs recognized at 2 p.m.

Each ceremony began with the ringing of a replica of the Liberty Bell. As America celebrates the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence this year, it is interesting to note the significance of this bell, which is used to begin all �� Commencement services, convocations and special assemblies. The bell was first rung in the fall of 1970 to inaugurate ��’s first year as a senior college. The replica weighs 44 pounds and stands 15 inches high. It is one of a limited edition of 2,400 bells produced to mark the bicentenary of American Independence (1776-1976)—one for each month of the 200 years.

�� President Nate Evans welcomed graduates and their guests to begin both ceremonies. He recognized the accomplishments of the students and thanked parents, spouses, friends, and loved ones who supported them along the way. He also expressed gratitude for the �� faculty and staff for teaching, guiding, and mentoring students to achieve their goals.

Each commencement program also included remarks and greetings from GWU Chair of the Board of Trustees the Rev. Dr. M. Lamont Littlejohn Jr. He congratulated their success and challenged them to carry the values that define �� with them—to live “Pro Deo et Humanitate,” for God and Humanity.

During the undergraduate ceremony, Student Body President Andrea Stampone addressed her classmates, reflecting on the defining role of kindness and community in the Gardner‑Webb experience.

“My charge to you today is to carry this kindness into all walks of life that you may enter,” Stampone stated. “Treat people with kindness. Be a person who needs people. Be someone that runs to others when they need people, because these things make you a lucky person. Care deeply. Listen carefully. Love loudly. So go out into the world, and make that community special. Because it’s not that being a part of something special makes you special, but instead that something is special because you are a part of it.”

The featured speaker for both commencement ceremonies was Patrick Woody, a Gardner‑Webb 2003 alumnus and former student body president. He is founder and CEO of Point of Warning, a consulting firm that provides risk, intelligence, public policy, and organizational improvement services to government, private sector, and nonprofit organizations.

A cybersecurity professional with experience across the U.S. Intelligence Community—including the CIA, Department of Homeland Security, and National Counterterrorism Center—Woody directly advised multiple U.S. Presidents, White House leadership, Cabinet officials, and Congress on critical national security issues.

Woody received a Bachelor of Arts in history at ��. He has a Master of Arts degree in international relations and comparative politics from George Mason University and doctoral work in international relations at the University of Maryland.

He shared that his speech included advice that he wished someone had given him when he graduated 23 years ago. “I’m going to talk to you about getting fired,” Woody explained. “Not from a job or a career, but from a mindset. It’s getting fired from the comfort of thinking that because you’ve achieved this milestone, you’ve arrived and there’s no more work to be done. I want to talk about a different way of looking at the future and your post-graduate life—one built around five principles that spell out the word ‘F-I-R-E-D.’ If you leave today with these principles, I promise you that the next chapters of your life will be the best ones.”

Woody described each guiding idea and closed with a short summary. “Fail—and let it teach you,” he reiterated. “Invest—in yourself, your future, and others. Reflect—so that you are steering and not just speeding. Educate yourself—always, relentlessly, joyfully. Dialogue—across every divide you encounter. Being ‘FIRED’ is not a setback. It is a posture. It is how you walk into every meeting, every relationship, every new chapter of your life—with humility, with purpose, and with the courage to keep growing.”

Beyond the commencement addresses, the ceremonies also featured special presentations and awards recognizing excellence, service, and remembrance within the Gardner‑Webb community.

Commencement Honors and Recognitions

Posthumous Degree Presentation

Before undergraduate students walked across the stage to receive individual recognition for their accomplishments, Evans took a moment to remember Isaiah Hughes, a valued member of the campus community whose academic journey was tragically cut short. Hughes was an accomplished student in the Godbold College of Business and destined for great success. Evans invited the Hughes family to join him on stage, and he conferred the Bachelor of Science degree in management information systems posthumously upon Isaiah Hughes.

Undergraduate Awards and Distinctions

During the morning ceremony, several awards were presented to recognize graduates for their exceptional achievements. Senior Scholastic Awards, were presented to the members of the graduating class who earned the highest grade point average during their terms of university study. The winners were:

The Most Outstanding Male and Female Graduate Awards were given to the members of the graduating class, who, judged by the faculty, best exemplify the qualities of leadership, citizenship and academic excellence.

The recipient of the Most Outstanding Female Graduate Award is Kylee A. Morris, who received a Bachelor of Science in biology. Morris began her studies at GWU in 2022 as the University’s third Tucker Scholar, an honor that includes full tuition, room and board for eight semesters. She was also crowned Miss GWU in 2025, and is a section leader in the marching band.

The recipient of the Most Outstanding Male Graduate Award is Paul M. McElearney, who earned a Bachelor of Arts in political science and international affairs. McElearney, former GWU student body president, served on the search committee for GWU’s 14th president. He is also a cadet captain in �� Reserve Officers’ Training Corp (ROTC) detachment assigned under the Southern Guards Battalion.

The �� Online Scholastic Award is given at each commencement to the online student with the highest cumulative grade point average. The winners were:

Graduate Scholarship and Research Recognition

The afternoon ceremony featured the presentation of the Darlene J. Gravett Citizen Scholar Award, which recognizes graduate research with the potential to make a meaningful contribution to the improvement of society.

Dr. Sydney Brown, assistant provost of Academic Systems and Graduate Studies, presented the award to this year’s recipient, Dr. Brittany Hudgins-Graham. Brown noted that Hudgins-Graham exemplifies the purpose of the award in a powerful and timely way. Her work, “Forest Therapy for Mental Balance: A Christian Community Approach,” brings together mental health, community, and faith to address a growing need in our world today.

“What makes this project especially compelling is its focus on practice—creating accessible, community-based approaches that support well-being in real and tangible ways,” Brown observed. “Her work reminds us that research is not only about understanding problems, but about responding to them with care, creativity, and purpose. Dr. Hudgins-Graham’s work reflects the very spirit of this award—scholarship that serves others and strengthens communities.”

Senior Scholastic awards will be presented to traditional undergraduate and online students, and doctoral candidates will receive their hoods. Evans will confer undergraduate and graduate degrees on all graduates.

Patrick Woody

The featured speaker, Patrick Woody, a Gardner‑Webb 2003 alumnus and former student body president, will bring the commencement address. He is founder and CEO of Point of Warning, a consulting firm that provides risk, intelligence, public policy, and organizational improvement services to government, private sector, and nonprofit organizations.

He later served in leadership roles at Twitter, Twitch, and Epic Games, where he became a recognized authority on combating online harms such as extremism, information integrity, child safety, and strategic partnerships. Before his time in government, Woody worked for the One Economy Corporation, using technology to improve the lives of individuals and communities facing poverty in the United States and abroad.

Woody has had the privilege of serving on the boards of directors for multiple organizations.

Finance Team Qualifies for Nationals and Business Student Places in Accounting

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Students from Gardner‑Webb University’s Godbold College of Business recently earned top honors at the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) State Leadership Conference in Charlotte, N.C. A four-member finance team secured first place in the highly competitive Finance Case competition, earning a spot at the national conference this summer. In addition to the team victory, a freshman business student also placed in the accounting competition.

The students worked under the guidance of faculty advisors, Dr. RJ Quillinan, assistant professor of business law, and Dr. Angelina Smith, assistant professor of business.

The Gardner‑Webb finance team included Will Brooks of Earl, N.C., Demarqus Little of High Point, N.C., Kadeyn Marshall of Shelby, N.C., and William Stevenson of Durham, N.C. They outperformed 12 other teams to claim the title and advance to the FBLA National Leadership Conference scheduled for June in Las Vegas, Nev.

“The students spent hours pouring into the competition,” Quillinan praised. “They prepared with a strong focus on providing analytical feedback to the judges, coupled with a presentation style that was smooth, personable, and consistent with the standards set forth within the Godbold College of Business.”

In individual competition, Alaena Locklear of Lawndale, N.C., placed sixth in Foundations of Accounting. The conference was a first for Locklear, and she’s already planning to attend next year.

“The comprehensive test I took contained questions about the basics and mechanics of financial statements, from what accounts belong on the Balance sheet to how the Statement of Cash Flows works,” she recalled. “Preparation for the competition was a lot of coordination between myself and Dr. Smith, who guided me through the process. I took some time to study over what I’ve learned in my accounting classes so far, and I found a lot of that material relevant to what was on the test.”

Locklear added, “I am very proud of everyone who participated. The Godbold College of Business has been instrumental in all of our successes, and I’d like to especially thank Drs. (Amber) Daniels, Smith, and Quillinan.”

Quillinan emphasized that FBLA plays a central role in bridging classroom learning with professional preparation. “On campus, FBLA may be referred to as a ‘club,’ but it is more than that. It is an educational, co‑curricular, academic program that allows for project‑based learning set in a competitive environment,” he noted. “In the case of the Finance Case competition, it helped students hone soft skills that we strive to provide in the Godbold College of Business, alongside the analytical and complex financial requirements to answer the question(s) posed.”

Marshall, a sophomore economics and finance major, explained the team’s preparation strategy. “It was teamwork—everyone on our team had their roles,” he shared. Outlining each member’s contribution, Marshall explained that he compiled the data, Brooks was the manager, Stevenson created the presentation and speech, and Little handled investment and money management.

He said the experience proved their abilities to succeed in a real-world scenario. He concluded, “It feels amazing; it makes our long nights and late work hours worth it.”

Stevenson, a junior economics and finance major, said the case required students to act as financial advisors for a marketing analyst. “We managed his investments, set up bank accounts, made decisions for his day-to-day life, and saved for a down payment on a house,” he described.

Echoing Marshall’s assessment, Stevenson said, “The greatest skill was teamwork and encouragement. We all played different roles and when we needed help, we all pitched in.”

Quillinan added that the students did most of the preparation on their own. He and Smith helped them refine their presentation skills. He stated, “We pointed out what may serve as differentiators against their competition: strength with the facts, providing more depth of analysis, and treating the presentation as a performance worthy of choreography and a personal touch.”

Stevenson summed up the experience as strengthening his financial knowledge and professional outlook. “This competition will look great on my resume and gives me a chance to network and meet young professionals,” he said. “This group helped me grow my financial literacy.”

Quillinan commended the students’ dedication and teamwork. “It was a lot of fun seeing these four come together, learn from one another, and use each team members’ strengths to ultimately win the competition,” he reflected. “I am proud to have been a coach to these four and look forward to doing so again, and again—if they let me.”
