Record-Setting Commitment Names the Tucker College of Health Sciences, Strengthens Academic Programs and Expands the Tucker Scholarship Program

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The family of Robert and Carolyn Tucker and �� have announced a record-setting $11 million gift to name the Tucker College of Health Sciences and expand the Tucker Scholarship Program. The commitment, representing the largest single pledge in the University’s history, reflects a decades-long partnership rooted in faith, service and a shared belief in the power of Christian higher education and the future of ��.

“This is an extraordinary blessing for ��. I am incredibly proud of the faculty, staff, and leaders who have worked so hard to build and strengthen our College of Health Sciences, and I am deeply grateful to the Tucker family for their belief in its future,” shared GWU President Nate Evans. “For decades, the Tuckers have believed in ��, our Christian mission, and our students. Their generosity has already changed thousands of lives, and this historic commitment will extend that impact for generations. We are profoundly grateful for their friendship, their trust, and their remarkable investment in ��, and I look forward to seeing all that will be accomplished through their generosity.”

The transformational gift will advance the Tucker College of Health Sciences’ academic programs and faculty support, enhance opportunities for student learning and help prepare skilled, compassionate healthcare professionals. Beginning in Fall 2027, it will increase the number of Tucker Scholars awarded annually to two, ultimately supporting eight Tucker Scholars concurrently.

“It is an honor and privilege to be entrusted with this generous gift,” affirmed Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Nicole Waters. “I am deeply grateful to the Tucker family. Their generosity honors the foundation laid by those who came before us, creates opportunities today, and offers hope for the future. Words cannot fully express my gratitude for this investment in our mission. My prayer is that every student educated through the Tucker College of Health Sciences will use their God-given talents to serve others with excellence and compassion, reflecting Christ’s love as they provide care across our region, throughout our nation, and around the world.”

For the Tucker family, investing in �� has always been personal. Their relationship with the University began when daughter Lisa Tucker enrolled as a student-athlete in the 1980s.

“This gift is given trusting in God and �� to continue to provide a haven where young adults may increase their faith while gaining a higher education,” Carolyn Tucker stated. “As we look back on our lives, it is usually family, mentors, and educators who have had the greatest influence. I pray that God will continue to be the guiding force at ��.”

A 1989 graduate and former volleyball player, Lisa Tucker has often credited the University with helping shape the course of her life and career. Her experiences as a student, along with the mentorship she received from former Vice President for Student Development Dr. Dee Hunt, inspired a lifelong connection to the institution and its mission. Today, she serves on the �� Board of Trustees, continuing a relationship that spans nearly four decades.

The life-changing impact �� had on Lisa Tucker inspired a broader commitment from her family. Seeing firsthand how the University shaped their daughter’s life, Robert and Carolyn Tucker became passionate about helping provide the same life-changing educational experience for future generations of students.

As business leaders, the couple understood the value of investing in opportunities with the potential to change lives. In 1960, they founded Shoe Show as a single store in Kannapolis, N.C. Guided by entrepreneurship and their faith, they built the company into one of the nation’s largest family-owned footwear retailers with more than 1,000 stores in 47 states. Throughout the company’s success, Robert and Carolyn Tucker remained committed to using their resources to create opportunities for others, strengthen communities and support educational initiatives that transform lives.

In recognition of their extraordinary business leadership, philanthropy and longstanding support of ��, Robert and Carolyn Tucker were awarded honorary doctorates by the University in 2013. The honor recognized both their accomplishments as entrepreneurs and their longstanding commitment to servant leadership, Christian values and educational opportunity.

The family’s support has left a lasting mark on the �� campus. In 2010, the Tuckers made what was then the largest gift in University history to begin construction of the Tucker Student Center, now the hub of student life on campus. Two years later, Robert Tucker surprised the University community by announcing an additional $500,000 contribution during the facility’s dedication ceremony.

Faith has long been the foundation of the Tucker family’s generosity. Robert and Carolyn Tucker centered their lives around Mark 12:29-31, a passage Carolyn Tucker describes as the family’s life verse and a guiding principle behind the family’s commitment to serving others.

The verses read: “Jesus answered him, ‘The first of all the commandments is: Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. And you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. This is the first commandment. And the second, like it, is this: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other commandment greater than these.’” (New King James Version)

The family’s faith is reflected in one of the University’s most distinctive scholarship programs, an eight-semester award that covers full tuition, room, and board. Established in 2019, through a $4 million endowment, the Tucker Heart, Soul, Mind and Strength Scholarship draws its name from the scripture.

The influence of those values can also be seen across the �� campus. Also in 2019, the University placed plaques bearing Mark 12:29-31 at the main entrances of every campus building. The passage was selected because of the example set by Robert and Carolyn Tucker, who requested a similar plaque for the entrance of the Tucker Student Center and have given the same plaques to their children and grandchildren to display at their homes.

In 2019, the Tucker family established the Tucker Heart, Soul, Mind and Strength Scholarship through a $4 million endowment.

“The Tucker family’s generosity is woven into the life of �� and has helped shape this University for decades,” said Jeff Cogburn, vice president for Advancement. “The Tucker College of Health Sciences brings new energy and lasting investment to an already incredible College, and its impact will reach across the University. We are grateful for the trust they continue to place in ��, and we will steward it well for the students and families who will benefit for generations to come.”

The $11 million pledge, to be fulfilled over five years, represents the latest chapter in a tradition of philanthropy that has helped to shape the �� experience for thousands of students. Tucker College of Health Sciences Dean Dr. Tracy Arnold said the gift will elevate the college’s ability to prepare future healthcare professionals while advancing its mission.

“In the Tucker College of Health Sciences, our commitment is to be Christ-centered, student-focused, and purpose-driven,” Arnold stated. “We are honored to be stewards of this generous gift, which will strengthen the education of our students through enhanced resources, hands-on learning opportunities, and experiences designed to meet the evolving health needs of our communities. It will also provide our faculty and staff with opportunities to advance teaching, mentorship, and innovation, further enriching the educational experience of our students. This gift is not only an investment in our students, faculty, and staff—it is an investment in the health and well-being of the communities our graduates will serve.”

Although Robert Tucker passed away in 2023, his legacy lives on through the values he instilled in his family and the lives impacted by his generosity. From the founding of Shoe Show to decades of support for ��, the Tuckers have demonstrated a steadfast commitment to faith, service and educational opportunity. Cleveland County Women’s Basketball Legends to Be Honored at Wall of Fame Ceremony

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� is pleased to host the 2026 Women’s Basketball Legends Wall of Fame Induction Ceremony on Saturday, Oct. 24, at 4 p.m. in Tucker Student Center. The ceremony, presented in partnership with the Alumni Basketball Association (ABA), Cleveland County Business Development Center and the City of Shelby, will honor the 50 Greatest Women High School Basketball Players of Cleveland County from 1965-1999, along with outstanding coaches, game officials and sports trainers.

Serving as keynote speaker for the event will be Terri R. Williams, head coach of the �� women’s basketball program. A native of Hampton, Va., Williams starred as a student-athlete at Penn State University before building an accomplished collegiate coaching career that included head coaching positions at Georgetown University and Auburn University. During her first season leading the Runnin’ Bulldogs in 2025-26, Williams earned Big South Conference Co-Coach of the Year honors.

“We are excited and honored to have Coach Williams as our keynote speaker,” said Dennis J. Toms, president of the Alumni Basketball Association. “This occasion reflects not only individual achievements but also the collective stories of how Cleveland County has produced athletes whose influence extends far beyond the basketball court.”

The event celebrates not only athletic excellence, but also the enduring legacy of women’s basketball across Cleveland County. Through decades of competition, leadership and community impact, these athletes helped shape the county’s rich basketball tradition while inspiring future generations.

Proceeds from the event will support scholarship and mentorship programs for local youth and assist with the planning and development of future initiatives.

Among the 50 honorees are several individuals with ties to ��, including former student-athletes Susan Bolt Briggs, Joan Cline Backhaus and Fredia Lawrence King, as well as longtime basketball officials Alphonso “Al” Graves and Terry Camp.

Honorees with �� Connections

Joan Cline Backhaus

One of the most prolific scorers in Cleveland County history, Backhaus scored 3,384 points during her three-year career at Waco High School before continuing her success at ��. During the 1957-59 seasons, she led the team in scoring both years, averaged 34 points per game and collected nearly 1,000 rebounds. In 2022, she was inducted into the �� Athletics Hall of Fame as a women’s basketball trailblazer.

Fredia Lawrence King

A standout at Burns High School, King scored 1,865 points while averaging 23 points and 14 rebounds per game. Some of Fredia’s many honors included, All-Conference, All-Tournament, All-County, All-State, and All-American in high school. King was recognized in the Burn High School Sports Hall of Fame in 2025.

After accepting a scholarship to ��, she recorded 2,201 career points and 1,220 rebounds. Her No. 21 jersey has been retired by both Burns High School and ��. She was inducted into the �� Athletics Hall of Fame in 2002 and the Cleveland County Sports Hall of Fame in 2025. She is currently a nominee for the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame.

Susan Bolt Briggs

A 1977 graduate of Burns High School, Briggs established herself at �� as one of the program’s top performers, finishing her career among the school’s top 10 in both scoring and rebounding. She recorded 1,236 career points and 625 rebounds while helping lead the team to a 17-4 record during her freshman season. In recognition of her outstanding contributions to �� women’s basketball, Briggs was inducted into the �� Athletics Hall of Fame in 2005.

Alphonso “Al” Graves

A graduate of Cherryville High School and former �� basketball standout, Graves helped lead the Runnin’ Bulldogs to the 1972 NAIA semifinals before beginning a distinguished 34-year officiating career. In 1981, he assisted Coach Bud Black with the men’s basketball team at Cherryville High School and with the �� women’s team. Graves has worked numerous tournament and regional finals and received several honors, including the Dick Knox Distinguished Service Award, Frank Pullen Memorial Award and Chuck Clemmons Memorial Award.

Terry Camp

A former national junior college scoring leader at Isothermal Community College, Camp continued his playing career at ��. His officiating career began in 1988 at Holly Oak Park and the Shelby City Park where he refereed church teams and community games until 1993. From 1993 to 1995, he officiated high school basketball games across North Carolina. He took a five-year hiatus until 2000 and then continued officiating high school basketball games until 2025. During his entire career, he officiated three high school regional finals, four conference championships, and four middle school conference championships.

The event is sanctioned by the City of Shelby and the North Carolina High School Athletic Association in cooperation with the Alumni Basketball Association LLC, Cleveland County Business Development Center and ��.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—��’s Homecoming 2026 will combine celebration and service as alumni, students, faculty, staff and friends gather Nov. 6-8 for athletic events, reunions, worship opportunities and longstanding campus traditions. Leading up to the weekend, the campus and community will also have the opportunity to support the Bulldog Cares Food Pantry.

“One of the things I love most about Homecoming is seeing Bulldogs of all generations come together,” said Shannon Hovis, Director of Alumni and Parent Relations. “From reconnecting with old friends to making new memories with family, there truly is something for everyone. We hope every Bulldog will find a reason to come home and celebrate with us.”

Bulldog Cares Collection Drive Kicks Off Homecoming Week

As part of Homecoming, �� will host a Bulldog Cares Food Pantry Collection Drive Nov. 2-7. Alumni, students, faculty, staff and community members are encouraged to donate nonperishable food items and pantry essentials to support students facing food insecurity.

Donations will benefit the Bulldog Cares Food Pantry, which provides free food and household necessities to currently enrolled students. Collection locations and a list of needed items will be available through Bulldog Cares.

University Welcomes Students, Alumni, Families and Community Members for Exclusive Early-Access Screening

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� will conclude its Homecoming weekend celebrations with an early-access showing of the first episode of “The Chosen” Season 6 on Nov. 8 at 7 p.m. in Tucker Student Center. The historical drama is based on the life of Jesus as seen through the eyes of those who knew Him. The showing is free and open to the public, and all are invited to gather for this exclusive preview.

“‘The Chosen’ is an exceptionally well-done series, and it is a powerful presentation of the life of Jesus,” noted Vice President and University Chaplain for Christian Life and Service Dr. Josh Parrott. “This is an opportunity for so many in our community to come together to have our hearts and minds oriented toward our Savior. We are thankful for the opportunity to share this episode, and all are welcome to attend!”

The preview is made possible by Come and See, the nonprofit foundation dedicated to ensuring all seven seasons of “The Chosen” are produced, translated into 600 languages, made globally accessible and offered free to viewers around the world. Set against the backdrop of Roman oppression in first-century Israel, the series provides an authentic and intimate look at Jesus’ revolutionary life and teachings. What began as a crowd-funded project has grown into a global phenomenon, reaching more than 308 million viewers and attracting more than 35 million social media followers.

Season 6 captures the historic events of Jesus’ final day through the lives of those who love Him and those who condemn Him. The new season will begin streaming on Prime Video on Nov. 15. In spring 2027, audiences will experience Jesus’ final hours when the crucifixion story is released worldwide as a theatrical film by Amazon MGM Studios.

“This season will be the most comprehensive deep dive into the story than anything we’ve done,” said Dallas Jenkins, creator and director of “The Chosen.”

�� Joins North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Transfer Pathways Initiative to Streamline Student Transfers

Digital Platform Simplifies Credit Transfers and Expands Educational Opportunities Across North Carolina

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� is among the 28 four-year institutions participating in North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Transfer Pathways, a new digital platform designed to streamline the transfer process for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Developed through a partnership between the NCICU and the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), the portal provides students with a user-friendly tool to evaluate transfer credits, explore degree programs and identify clear pathways to degree completion at �� and other participating institutions.

“For many students, transferring to a four-year university is an important step toward achieving their educational and career goals, and we want that process to be as simple and straightforward as possible,” said �� President Nate Evans. “This initiative helps remove barriers, provides greater clarity, and allows students to make informed decisions about their future. We are grateful to NCICU and the many partners who made this possible, and we are proud to be part of an effort that creates new opportunities for students across North Carolina.”

The platform gives prospective transfer students greater transparency as they consider educational opportunities. “Our goal is to remove uncertainty from the transfer process and help students confidently navigate their educational journey,” said Dr. A. Hope Williams, president of NCICU. “With NCICU Transfer Pathways, students can easily see how their credits align with degree programs and discover new opportunities for academic success.”

The multi-year initiative is supported by more than $2 million in philanthropic grant funding to build, launch, and sustain the platform across participating independent campuses. Major philanthropic supporters include The Cannon Foundation (funding year-one campus participation), The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations (AVDF), the Teagle Foundation, ECMC Foundation, the John M. Belk Endowment (JMBE), the Gates Foundation, and Ascendium Education Group. In addition, Lumina Foundation provided complementary funding to support the engagement of NCICU and NCCCS faculty and staff in the project.

As one of the participating institutions, �� has integrated its academic programs, course inventories and transfer information into the portal, helping prospective students understand how previously earned credits may apply toward their chosen degree programs.

“Community colleges provide an important foundation for thousands of students pursuing a bachelor’s degree, and �� is committed to helping those students take their next step,” said �� Vice President for Enrollment Dr. Lauren W. Gullett. “NCICU Transfer Pathways gives students an opportunity to see how their hard work translates into progress toward a degree at ��. By strengthening these connections with our community college partners, we are expanding access to a Christ-centered education and helping more students achieve their academic and professional goals.”

The NCICU Transfer Pathways network includes all 58 North Carolina Community College System campuses and 29 NCICU institutions, including Louisburg College, a two-year independent college. Louisburg and North Carolina’s community colleges serve as primary sending institutions, providing students with streamlined access to 28 participating four-year NCICU universities, including ��.

Key Features of the Platform

Designed for maximum flexibility, the NCICU Transfer Pathways platform offers interactive, student-centered features engineered to eliminate credit loss and improve completion rates:

Automated ICAA & Course-Equivalency Evaluation: Using a customized evaluation tool, the portal automatically maps completed coursework—including general education block transfers under the ICAA—against degree requirements at participating four-year institutions.
Multi-Institution Program Search & Comparison: Students can explore and compare academic programs, campus locations, distance-based search options, and degree requirements across participating independent institutions in real time.
Digital Credit Tracking: A centralized dashboard provides students and advisors with a visual representation of earned credits, degree progress, and remaining major requirements.
Direct Campus Connectivity: Students can save favorite programs, view institution profile details, and directly access application and financial aid portals.

Alumna Micahla Funderburk and Senior Melonie Chapman Demonstrate the Power of Mentorship, Experiential Learning and Service

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—��’s criminal justice administration program emphasizes experiential learning, giving traditional undergraduate students opportunities to see how classroom concepts translate into real-world practice. Through internships, career networking opportunities and mentorship from professionals in the field, students gain firsthand insight into the challenges and responsibilities of criminal justice careers.

Senior Melonie Chapman’s hands-on learning experience came through an eight-week internship with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD). There, she found herself learning from a familiar face: �� 2024 alumna Micahla Funderburk.

As a student, Funderburk was known across campus for her accomplishments on the basketball court, where she set records and helped lead the Runnin’ Bulldogs to Big South regular-season and tournament championships and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In the Criminal Justice program, however, faculty and classmates knew her for another reason: leadership.

Today, those same qualities guide Funderburk’s work as a police officer and mentor to the next generation of criminal justice professionals. “�� was an important chapter of my life,” she said. “I came there as a student-athlete playing college basketball, and now I get to represent the University in a completely different uniform. I’m proud that current students can see someone who was once in their position now working professionally in the field. I hope my journey shows them that the discipline and lessons they are developing at �� can carry far beyond graduation. It’s rewarding to know that my experience may encourage another student to believe that they can accomplish their goals too.”

Chapman said the firsthand look at CMPD operations confirmed her desire to pursue a career in the field. She had learned about the opportunity through ��’s Public Service Career Fair, which brings law enforcement agencies to campus for recruitment.

“The internship was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life,” Chapman affirmed. “Getting to spend the summer with 29 other college students from all over the county and experiencing everything together was truly amazing. We did physical training and classes three days a week and two days going on ride-a longs all over the city in the different divisions. We learned what it looked like to be a CMPD officer and what it looks like to be a CMPD recruit.”

One of the most meaningful aspects of the time was the opportunity to learn alongside Funderburk. The two had met at �� when Chapman was a freshman and Funderburk was a senior.

“I knew she was going into law enforcement, so I made sure to keep in contact with her,” Chapman related. “Then I found out I got accepted into the internship, so I immediately let her know. And my last week of the internship, I asked my supervisor at CMPD if I could do my last ride-along in her division.”

Watching Funderburk in action left a lasting impression. “Getting to ride with her was so much fun and seeing her way of policing was inspiring,” Chapman reflected. “She was very community-oriented and had a relationship with most of the people we encountered. In the time we weren’t taking calls, we would walk around in the community and talk to people. In my opinion, building trust with the community is one of the most important roles of being an effective police officer.”

Criminal justice instructor and retired police chief Tim W. Ledford witnessed Funderburk’s journey from student to police officer and now sees many of the same qualities emerging in Chapman. Reflecting on Funderburk’s time at ��, Ledford said she influenced her team and classmates.

“Micahla demonstrated throughout her college career that leadership is not simply about achievement, but about inspiring others to be their best,” Ledford observed. “Whether on the basketball court, in the classroom, or in her current role as a police officer, she continues to lead through example.”

Funderburk said her experience as a student-athlete contributed to her professional development. “My time at �� prepared me for law enforcement in more ways than I realized,” Funderburk shared. “Playing college basketball taught me discipline, accountability, teamwork, time management, and how to perform under pressure. As an athlete, I had to balance academics, practices, workouts, games and travel while still being responsible for my performance in the classroom.”

During her time on the �� women’s basketball team, Micahla Funderburk achieved a Big South record for the most 3-point field goals attempted and scored in one game.

She continued, “Now, as a police officer, I use many of those same skills. I have to remain composed in stressful situations, communicate with different personalities, work as part of a team, and make decisions when there is pressure around me. Basketball also taught me that everyone has a role, and that translates directly into police work.”

Funderburk added that her perspective on service and purpose was also shaped by ��’s Christ-centered environment. “Faith has played a major role in both my education and my career,” she said. “�� gave me an environment where faith was incorporated into my college experience, and it helped me understand the importance of having a purpose beyond myself. As a police officer, there are situations that can be emotionally and mentally challenging, and my faith helps keep me grounded. I pray for wisdom, protection, patience, and the ability to treat people with compassion. I believe God placed me in this profession for a reason, and I try to remember that I have an opportunity to make an impact on someone every time I put on the uniform.”

Guided by those values, Funderburk finds the greatest reward in helping others during some of life’s most challenging moments. “Police officers often meet people when they are scared, hurt, angry, or experiencing a crisis,” she observed. “Being able to bring some sense of safety or direction to that situation is meaningful to me. I also enjoy connecting with the community outside of enforcement. Sometimes the biggest impact comes from simply listening to someone, giving them resources, or showing them that you genuinely care.”

As Chapman prepares for graduation, she hopes to follow a similar path. “I plan on joining the CMPD Police Academy to become a police officer and work my way up to my end goal of being a K9 Officer,” she said.

Ledford believes Chapman is well-prepared for the journey ahead. “Melonie embodies the qualities we hope to instill in all criminal justice students,” he said. “She is academically strong, deeply committed to serving others, and consistently demonstrates the leadership, professionalism, and integrity necessary for success in the criminal justice field. The positive influence she has had on her fellow students is remarkable.”

Funderburk emphasized that internships and hands-on learning opportunities help students like Chapman build a strong foundation for their careers. “You can learn criminal justice concepts from a textbook, but being able to observe professionals, ask questions, and experience the environment firsthand gives you a completely different perspective,” she explained. “It can also help you determine which area of criminal justice is the best fit for you.”

Together, Funderburk and Chapman demonstrate how connections formed at �� can continue long after graduation and help prepare the next generation of leaders in criminal justice.

Campus Tradition Returns with Games, Activities, Candy and Prizes

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Families from across the community are invited to celebrate the fall season at �� during the annual Octoberfest on Thursday, Oct. 29, from 6 to 8 p.m. For more than 20 years, Octoberfest has welcomed generations of families to campus for an evening of fun, fellowship and community connection.

The campus tradition will transform the Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center (LYCC) into a festive gathering place filled with inflatables, games and activities hosted by �� student clubs, organizations and athletics teams. The University will also serve pizza during the event, while children can enjoy collecting treats at an outdoor Trunk-or-Treat featuring festively decorated vehicles.

Over the years, Octoberfest has expanded into a collaborative community celebration co-hosted by the University, the Town of Boiling Springs and the Ruby C. Hunt YMCA.

“Octoberfest is a wonderful event for us here at ��!” said Jaquan Lynch, associate minister of athletic ministries. “We bring our community together one game, one sweet treat, and one joyful moment at a time. Octoberfest is a time to celebrate connection, fun, and community. Our students have the opportunity to serve and create a fun experience for local youth, while families can come together and enjoy a memorable evening filled with games, candy, laughter, and fellowship.

In addition to activities inside LYCC, the Town of Boiling Springs Police Department will bring a patrol car for children and families to explore. Officer Anthony Fields said participation goes beyond monitoring event safety. “It’s about active relationship building,” he explained. “We treasure opportunities like this where we can step out of an enforcement role and connect with our residents, GWU students, and local families in a completely relaxed, celebratory environment. Bringing our patrol vehicle to the event gives children a hands-on, positive experience with law enforcement early on. Public safety relies heavily on mutual trust, and participating in this long-standing town tradition helps ensure that our community knows our officers are approachable, supportive, and deeply invested in the neighborhood we all share.”

The Ruby C. Hunt YMCA will once again offer its popular “Spooky Bus,” a family-friendly mini haunted house featuring festive lights, laughter and plenty of Halloween fun without the scares.

“The YMCA loves partnering with the Town of Boiling Springs and �� for OctoberFest because it gives us the opportunity to come together and create a fun, safe, and welcoming experience for kids and families in our community,” said Amber Wray, family programs director and media specialist for the Ruby C. Hunt YMCA. “It’s a great reflection of what we strive for at the Y: Faith, Belonging, and Excellence. Through partnerships like this, we build connections, make everyone feel like they belong, and work together to create an event that our community can enjoy and look forward to each year. Partnership will Provide Students with Opportunities to Earn College Credit While in High School Beginning Fall 2027

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� and Cleveland County Schools have signed a Dual Enrollment Memorandum of Understanding that will create new opportunities for high school students to earn college credit while completing their secondary education. The partnership is scheduled to begin in Fall 2027.

The agreement establishes a framework for eligible students attending Burns High School, Crest High School, Kings Mountain High School, Shelby High School, Turning Point Academy and Cleveland Innovations to enroll in select �� courses for both high school and college credit.

Through the partnership, �� will provide academic advising, enrollment assistance and access to approved college coursework, helping students gain an early start on their higher education journey while exploring future academic and career pathways.

Senior Art Major Frances Blackston Helps Organize the Exhibit Opening on Oct. 16 in Tucker Gallery

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The Department of Communication, Art, and Design (CAD) will host a Faculty-Staff Showcase throughout the 2026 Fall Semester in the Ali Pouryousefi Memorial Art Gallery in Tucker Student Center. The exhibit will open on Oct. 16 with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. and remain on display through November.

Jessica Maloney, assistant professor of photography and design and chair of the department, appreciates the opportunity to feature the faculty and staff. “I’m so glad that this exhibit highlights the wide range of expertise that we have in our building!” she noted. “We all come from such different disciplines that it’s wonderful to see our work together. I hope this exhibition gives students an idea of what we all do in our professional practices and also inspires them to explore careers in the communication, art, and design industries.”

Dr. Nancy Bottoms, an adjunct professor and professor emerita of English and art, said the showcase is also a learning experience for senior art major Frances Blackston, who is serving as co-organizer of the exhibit as part of her Senior Exhibitions course, a graduation requirement.

Blackston shared that the experience provides valuable hands-on training in reviewing, selecting and displaying artwork, which are skills she hopes to use in her future career. Her long-term goal is to open a gallery that supports local artists and provides a space for them to share their work with the community.

Free Tuition, Mandatory Fees Available to Qualifying Students from Families Earning $100,000 or Less Beginning in Fall 2027

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.— �� is opening new pathways to affordability through its Open Door Guarantee, which will provide eligible students with free tuition and coverage of specified university fees beginning in Fall 2027. Eligible new first-time freshmen and transfer students from families with an annual household income of $100,000 or less, as determined through the FAFSA, may qualify.

The program reflects the University’s commitment to ensuring that a private, Christ-centered education is within reach for more students and families.

“The Open Door Guarantee is about making the path to a �� education clearer and more accessible for students and families,” noted �� President Nate Evans. “We want more students to have access to a high-quality Christian university where they can discover their calling, prepare for their future, and grow in their faith. This is about opening doors, expanding opportunity, and ensuring that finances do not stand in the way.”

The Open Door Guarantee combines federal, state and �� scholarships and grants to cover eligible tuition and mandatory fees. �� will provide additional institutional funding when needed to close the remaining gap. Loans will not be used to fulfill the guarantee.

“We are incredibly excited to offer the Open Door Guarantee to prospective students and their families,” said Lauren Gullett, vice president of Enrollment. “Too often, students may rule out a private, Christian education because of the published cost without realizing what may actually be affordable for their family. The Open Door Guarantee removes some of that uncertainty by giving qualifying families a clear commitment: tuition and mandatory fees will be covered. This opens the door for more students to receive an exceptional �� education and find a community where they belong while pursuing their goals with greater confidence in what is financially possible.”

How the Open Door Guarantee Works

Students entering in Fall 2027 or Spring 2028 should apply to �� and complete the 2027–2028 FAFSA by March 1, 2027, for priority consideration. ��’s FAFSA school code is 002929.

Eligible students must enroll full time in a traditional undergraduate degree program, pursue their first bachelor’s degree, live on campus and complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). No separate Open Door Guarantee application is required. The program is open to eligible students from every U.S. state and territory.

The guarantee covers standard tuition and mandatory university fees, including fees for student activities, digital learning, the Student Health Clinic, residential amenities and orientation. It does not cover housing, meals, books, transportation or personal expenses, although students may qualify for additional aid for those costs.

Eligible first-time freshmen may receive the guarantee for up to eight consecutive fall and spring semesters if they continue to meet annual requirements. Transfer students’ eligibility will be based on accepted credits, academic standing and the time needed to complete their first bachelor’s degree.

More Than One Path to Affordability

The Open Door Guarantee is one part of ��’s broader approach to college affordability. In addition, qualifying first-time freshmen with a weighted high school GPA of 3.5 or higher may receive a merit scholarship equal to 50% of tuition. The University also offers academic scholarships, grants and competitive awards based on achievement, leadership, service and financial need.
