Christian Studies Major Uses Scholarship Opportunities, Leadership Roles and Service Experiences to Prepare for Ministry

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—As a teenager, Ignite Scholar Jackson Hartley made one of the most important decisions of his life: following Jesus. “God saved my life when I was in high school,” noted Hartley. Since then, Hartley has devoted himself to ministry. “I would love to be in a role where I can minister to teenagers, because I want to pay forward the work that was done in my life.”

A Christian studies major, Hartley is from Winston-Salem, N.C., and first heard about �� from friends and family. After touring the campus, he was drawn to the close-knit and Christ-centered community. “I immediately enjoyed the campus atmosphere, outdoors, and the emphasis on belief in God,” Hartley explained. “The campus just fit me. It fit my life, and I knew the visions I had for my college experience had begun to be fulfilled.”

He believes his degree is equipping him to serve in a variety of settings. “No matter if I’m a youth pastor or a professor, if I become a chaplain in the military, or even if I explore a different field, I can use ministry in every area,” Hartley noted.

Knowing �� was where he felt called to continue growing in his faith and preparing for ministry, Hartley was grateful when the Ignite Scholarship opened the door for him to attend. “Being an Ignite Scholar means that I’ve been chosen for a great honor,” Hartley shared. “It makes me want to represent �� well, since I’ve been entrusted with such a great opportunity.”

The Ignite Excellence Scholarship, ��’s most competitive academic award, recognizes students who demonstrate exceptional academic achievement, leadership and service. Awarded to a select group of students each year, the scholarship provides full tuition for up to eight semesters, while encouraging recipients to continue growing as leaders and servants.

During his time on campus, Hartley has had the privilege to learn from many respected academic leaders. He credits Dr. Paula Qualls for her outstanding teaching methods, saying that she has been a profound influence both in his personal life and academic journey. “She clearly has so much passion for her subject…and explains Old Testament theology in such a simple way,” he described.

Hartley noted how her teaching style is interactive, which enhances the learning process for students even more. “I loved it when she brought items from Israel and Jerusalem to class…because I got to see what I’ve been learning about and researching right in front of me,” he said.

Hartley actively participates in multiple organizations at �� and is well known for his commitment to service. He is a men’s Bible study leader with Campus Ministries United and is involved with ��’s FOCUS (Fellowship of Christians United in Service) ministry, which hosts faith-filled retreats for youth throughout the region. He also serves in productions and media for several on-campus events, as well as being the vice president of the Religious Studies Association.

Additionally, Hartley is a Peer Leader, mentoring first-year students, and a Student Recruitment Ambassador, working to represent �� to prospective students and their families. This role gives him the ability to share his love for ��’s Christ-centered community. He emphasizes that �� is a place for everyone: “I believe a non-believer can come to this campus and leave with a new purpose in life, and a believer can come here and have their faith sharpened like iron.”

Digital Platform Simplifies Credit Transfers and Expands Educational Opportunities Across North Carolina

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� is among the 28 four-year institutions participating in North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities (NCICU) Transfer Pathways, a new digital platform designed to streamline the transfer process for students pursuing a bachelor’s degree. Developed through a partnership between the NCICU and the North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS), the portal provides students with a user-friendly tool to evaluate transfer credits, explore degree programs and identify clear pathways to degree completion at �� and other participating institutions.

“For many students, transferring to a four-year university is an important step toward achieving their educational and career goals, and we want that process to be as simple and straightforward as possible,” said �� President Nate Evans. “This initiative helps remove barriers, provides greater clarity, and allows students to make informed decisions about their future. We are grateful to NCICU and the many partners who made this possible, and we are proud to be part of an effort that creates new opportunities for students across North Carolina.”

The platform gives prospective transfer students greater transparency as they consider educational opportunities. “Our goal is to remove uncertainty from the transfer process and help students confidently navigate their educational journey,” said Dr. A. Hope Williams, president of NCICU. “With NCICU Transfer Pathways, students can easily see how their credits align with degree programs and discover new opportunities for academic success.”

The multi-year initiative is supported by more than $2 million in philanthropic grant funding to build, launch, and sustain the platform across participating independent campuses. Major philanthropic supporters include The Cannon Foundation (funding year-one campus participation), The Arthur Vining Davis Foundations (AVDF), the Teagle Foundation, ECMC Foundation, the John M. Belk Endowment (JMBE), the Gates Foundation, and Ascendium Education Group. In addition, Lumina Foundation provided complementary funding to support the engagement of NCICU and NCCCS faculty and staff in the project.

As one of the participating institutions, �� has integrated its academic programs, course inventories and transfer information into the portal, helping prospective students understand how previously earned credits may apply toward their chosen degree programs.

“Community colleges provide an important foundation for thousands of students pursuing a bachelor’s degree, and �� is committed to helping those students take their next step,” said �� Vice President for Enrollment Dr. Lauren W. Gullett. “NCICU Transfer Pathways gives students an opportunity to see how their hard work translates into progress toward a degree at ��. The NCICU Transfer Pathways network includes all 58 North Carolina Community College System campuses and 29 NCICU institutions, including Louisburg College, a two-year independent college. Louisburg and North Carolina’s community colleges serve as primary sending institutions, providing students with streamlined access to 28 participating four-year NCICU universities, including ��.

Designed for maximum flexibility, the NCICU Transfer Pathways platform offers interactive, student-centered features engineered to eliminate credit loss and improve completion rates:

Automated ICAA & Course-Equivalency Evaluation: Using a customized evaluation tool, the portal automatically maps completed coursework—including general education block transfers under the ICAA—against degree requirements at participating four-year institutions.
Multi-Institution Program Search & Comparison: Students can explore and compare academic programs, campus locations, distance-based search options, and degree requirements across participating independent institutions in real time.
Digital Credit Tracking: A centralized dashboard provides students and advisors with a visual representation of earned credits, degree progress, and remaining major requirements.

From Classroom to Community: �� Connections Strengthen Learning Beyond Graduation

Alumna Micahla Funderburk and Senior Melonie Chapman Demonstrate the Power of Mentorship, Experiential Learning and Service

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—��’s criminal justice administration program emphasizes experiential learning, giving traditional undergraduate students opportunities to see how classroom concepts translate into real-world practice. Through internships, career networking opportunities and mentorship from professionals in the field, students gain firsthand insight into the challenges and responsibilities of criminal justice careers.

Senior Melonie Chapman’s hands-on learning experience came through an eight-week internship with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD). There, she found herself learning from a familiar face: �� 2024 alumna Micahla Funderburk.

As a student, Funderburk was known across campus for her accomplishments on the basketball court, where she set records and helped lead the Runnin’ Bulldogs to Big South regular-season and tournament championships and a trip to the NCAA Tournament. In the Criminal Justice program, however, faculty and classmates knew her for another reason: leadership.

Today, those same qualities guide Funderburk’s work as a police officer and mentor to the next generation of criminal justice professionals. “�� was an important chapter of my life,” she said. “I came there as a student-athlete playing college basketball, and now I get to represent the University in a completely different uniform. I’m proud that current students can see someone who was once in their position now working professionally in the field. I hope my journey shows them that the discipline and lessons they are developing at �� can carry far beyond graduation. It’s rewarding to know that my experience may encourage another student to believe that they can accomplish their goals too.”

Chapman said the firsthand look at CMPD operations confirmed her desire to pursue a career in the field. She had learned about the opportunity through ��’s Public Service Career Fair, which brings law enforcement agencies to campus for recruitment.

“The internship was one of the most eye-opening experiences of my life,” Chapman affirmed. “Getting to spend the summer with 29 other college students from all over the county and experiencing everything together was truly amazing. We did physical training and classes three days a week and two days going on ride-a longs all over the city in the different divisions. We learned what it looked like to be a CMPD officer and what it looks like to be a CMPD recruit.”

One of the most meaningful aspects of the time was the opportunity to learn alongside Funderburk. The two had met at �� when Chapman was a freshman and Funderburk was a senior.

“I knew she was going into law enforcement, so I made sure to keep in contact with her,” Chapman related. “Then I found out I got accepted into the internship, so I immediately let her know. And my last week of the internship, I asked my supervisor at CMPD if I could do my last ride-along in her division.”

Watching Funderburk in action left a lasting impression. “Getting to ride with her was so much fun and seeing her way of policing was inspiring,” Chapman reflected. “She was very community-oriented and had a relationship with most of the people we encountered. In the time we weren’t taking calls, we would walk around in the community and talk to people. In my opinion, building trust with the community is one of the most important roles of being an effective police officer.”

Criminal justice instructor and retired police chief Tim W. Ledford witnessed Funderburk’s journey from student to police officer and now sees many of the same qualities emerging in Chapman. Reflecting on Funderburk’s time at ��, Ledford said she influenced her team and classmates.

“Micahla demonstrated throughout her college career that leadership is not simply about achievement, but about inspiring others to be their best,” Ledford observed. “Whether on the basketball court, in the classroom, or in her current role as a police officer, she continues to lead through example.”

Funderburk said her experience as a student-athlete contributed to her professional development. “My time at �� prepared me for law enforcement in more ways than I realized,” Funderburk shared. “Playing college basketball taught me discipline, accountability, teamwork, time management, and how to perform under pressure. As an athlete, I had to balance academics, practices, workouts, games and travel while still being responsible for my performance in the classroom.”

During her time on the �� women’s basketball team, Micahla Funderburk achieved a Big South record for the most 3-point field goals attempted and scored in one game.

She continued, “Now, as a police officer, I use many of those same skills. I have to remain composed in stressful situations, communicate with different personalities, work as part of a team, and make decisions when there is pressure around me. Basketball also taught me that everyone has a role, and that translates directly into police work.”

Funderburk added that her perspective on service and purpose was also shaped by ��’s Christ-centered environment. “Faith has played a major role in both my education and my career,” she said. “�� gave me an environment where faith was incorporated into my college experience, and it helped me understand the importance of having a purpose beyond myself. As a police officer, there are situations that can be emotionally and mentally challenging, and my faith helps keep me grounded. I pray for wisdom, protection, patience, and the ability to treat people with compassion. I believe God placed me in this profession for a reason, and I try to remember that I have an opportunity to make an impact on someone every time I put on the uniform.”

Guided by those values, Funderburk finds the greatest reward in helping others during some of life’s most challenging moments. “Police officers often meet people when they are scared, hurt, angry, or experiencing a crisis,” she observed. “Being able to bring some sense of safety or direction to that situation is meaningful to me. I also enjoy connecting with the community outside of enforcement. Sometimes the biggest impact comes from simply listening to someone, giving them resources, or showing them that you genuinely care.”

As Chapman prepares for graduation, she hopes to follow a similar path. “I plan on joining the CMPD Police Academy to become a police officer and work my way up to my end goal of being a K9 Officer,” she said.

Ledford believes Chapman is well-prepared for the journey ahead. “Melonie embodies the qualities we hope to instill in all criminal justice students,” he said. “She is academically strong, deeply committed to serving others, and consistently demonstrates the leadership, professionalism, and integrity necessary for success in the criminal justice field. The positive influence she has had on her fellow students is remarkable.”

Funderburk emphasized that internships and hands-on learning opportunities help students like Chapman build a strong foundation for their careers. “You can learn criminal justice concepts from a textbook, but being able to observe professionals, ask questions, and experience the environment firsthand gives you a completely different perspective,” she explained. “It can also help you determine which area of criminal justice is the best fit for you.”

Together, Funderburk and Chapman demonstrate how connections formed at �� can continue long after graduation and help prepare the next generation of leaders in criminal justice.

��, Cleveland County Schools Sign Dual Enrollment Agreement

Partnership will Provide Students with Opportunities to Earn College Credit While in High School Beginning Fall 2027

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� and Cleveland County Schools have signed a Dual Enrollment Memorandum of Understanding that will create new opportunities for high school students to earn college credit while completing their secondary education. The partnership is scheduled to begin in Fall 2027.

The agreement establishes a framework for eligible students attending Burns High School, Crest High School, Kings Mountain High School, Shelby High School, Turning Point Academy and Cleveland Innovations to enroll in select �� courses for both high school and college credit.

Through the partnership, �� will provide academic advising, enrollment assistance and access to approved college coursework, helping students gain an early start on their higher education journey while exploring future academic and career pathways.

�� Faculty-Staff Showcase Highlights Artistic and Scholarly Talent

Senior Art Major Frances Blackston Helps Organize the Exhibit Opening on Oct. 16 in Tucker Gallery

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The Department of Communication, Art, and Design (CAD) will host a Faculty-Staff Showcase throughout the 2026 Fall Semester in the Ali Pouryousefi Memorial Art Gallery in Tucker Student Center. The exhibit will open on Oct. 16 with a reception from 4 to 6 p.m. and remain on display through November.

Jessica Maloney, assistant professor of photography and design and chair of the department, appreciates the opportunity to feature the faculty and staff. “I’m so glad that this exhibit highlights the wide range of expertise that we have in our building!” she noted. “We all come from such different disciplines that it’s wonderful to see our work together. I hope this exhibition gives students an idea of what we all do in our professional practices and also inspires them to explore careers in the communication, art, and design industries.”

Dr. Nancy Bottoms, an adjunct professor and professor emerita of English and art, said the showcase is also a learning experience for senior art major Frances Blackston, who is serving as co-organizer of the exhibit as part of her Senior Exhibitions course, a graduation requirement.

Blackston shared that the experience provides valuable hands-on training in reviewing, selecting and displaying artwork, which are skills she hopes to use in her future career. Her long-term goal is to open a gallery that supports local artists and provides a space for them to share their work with the community.

Students from Across the Carolinas will Rehearse with Distinguished Conductors Before a Public Concert in Dover Theatre

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� will welcome student singers from across North and South Carolina for its 47th annual Choral Clinic on Oct. 19. The daylong event will culminate in a free public concert at 5:30 p.m. in Dover Theatre.

“�� Choirs are honored to host the Choral Clinic for its 47th year,” shared Dr. Joshua Cheney, associate professor of music and director of choral activities. “This event provides an opportunity for choristers in North and South Carolina to rehearse and perform together with regionally, nationally, and internationally acclaimed conductors who are industry leaders in choral education and artistry.

Cheney is expecting over 300 students to attend, and they will participate in one of two festival ensembles. The High School Festival Chorus will be directed by Dr. Alissa Rowe, director of choral studies at Louisiana State University. The Middle School Treble Festival Chorus will be led by Dr. Eric Johnson, coordinator of music education at ��.

Throughout the day, participants will rehearse in ��’s music facilities, interact with university faculty and students, and experience campus life before presenting the evening performance.

Jennifer Duckworth, the choir director East Burke High School in Connelly Springs, N.C., has brought her students to the clinic for eight years and usually has some parents who attend the evening performance. “The �� Choral Clinic is a valuable experience for students because they get the opportunity to work with collegiate level choral directors and sing with other students who have a passion for choral music,” she observed. “Not only are these students learning how to improve their vocal technique and music reading skills, but they are also learning to collaborate and communicate through music. The �� Choral Clinic inspires students to learn more difficult music and creates excitement about doing a variety of choral music.”

The High School Festival Chorus will perform “Dies Irae” by Michael John Trotta, “I Dream a World” by Rosephanye Powell, “Sing Out, My Soul” by Marques L.A. Garrett and “The Music of Stillness” by Elaine Hagenberg.

The Middle School Treble Festival Chorus repertoire includes “Here Comes the Sun,” arranged by the Podd Brothers; “Quiet Sea” by Melissa Malvar-Keylock and Jill Friederdorf; “Kookaburra” by Melissa Malvar-Keylock and Jill Friederdorf; and “Shout for Joy” by Sally Albrecht and Jay Althouse.

Cheney noted that the clinic has become a longstanding tradition that enriches students and music educators throughout the region. In addition to the musical experience, Cheney values the opportunity to connect with fellow educators and inspire future members of the �� choral program.

He added, “Personally, I look forward to this event every year because I am honored to provide this opportunity for my colleagues and their students in k-12 education, to be in community with them, to share in the stage with them, and to get to know future students and members of �� Choirs. It really is a great day!”

The concert is free and open to the public and will begin at 5:30 p.m. in Dover Theatre on the �� campus.

�� Chorales Selected to Perform at Biltmore During Christmas Season

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—For many visitors, Christmas at Biltmore in Asheville, N.C., is a treasured holiday tradition filled with sparkling lights, towering trees and seasonal music. This November, a group of �� students will become part of that experience, lending their voices to the festive atmosphere inside America’s largest home.

Members of ��’s Gardner Singers and Webb Chorale have been selected to perform at the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., on Nov. 13 after successfully completing Biltmore’s audition process. The opportunity offers students a chance to perform for guests during one of the estate’s busiest and most celebrated seasons.

The University Chorales include Gardner Singers, directed by Dr. Aaron Rice, professor of music and chair of the music department, and Webb Chorale, directed by Dr. Eric Johnson, assistant professor of music education. These non-audition ensembles are open to students of any major at �� and regularly perform on campus and events in the local area.

Rice noted that the invitation reflects both the quality of the University’s vocal ensembles and a commitment to creating meaningful experiences for students beyond the classroom. Rice helped lead a performance tour of France in 2024, and the department is currently raising funds for a 2027 performance trip to New Orleans. While those opportunities take students far from home, the Biltmore opportunity offers a unique chance to engage with one of North Carolina’s most iconic destinations.

“For us as an institution in the foothills, it makes total sense for us to connect with our region,” he observed. “Biltmore is literally in our backyard and intrinsically part of the North Carolina culture, and a really exciting opportunity. Many of our students have never been and even the ones who have been, even fewer have been at Christmas.”

The ensembles will perform in the house’s Winter Garden, where guests will encounter the choirs as they begin touring the historic home. Gardner Singers will perform beginning at 1:45 p.m., followed by Webb Chorale from approximately 2:15 to 2:45 p.m.

Among the students participating are brothers, Corwin and Thomas Stanley, who are members of the Gardner Singers. Corwin, an Ignite Scholar, is a senior music and worship major and his brother is a sophomore. “I am so grateful for everyone who has invested in this opportunity for us and our friends in Gardner Singers to go share our talents at the Biltmore House,” Corwin shared.

Before they sing, students will have an opportunity to tour the estate and enjoy lunch on site. Rice observed that shared experiences, such as this trip and other performances, mission trips and service opportunities, often become some of the most meaningful parts of a student’s college experience, creating memories and connections that endure for years.

Community members, alumni and friends who would like to attend the performances are encouraged to purchase admission tickets directly through Biltmore as soon as possible. Guests should select house entry times that align with the performances, particularly the 1:45 p.m., 2 p.m. or 2:15 p.m. entry windows, as availability may be limited during the Christmas season.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� officials have announced faculty promotions and tenure appointments for the 2026-27 academic year. These distinctions recognize excellence in teaching, scholarship, service, and leadership among members of the University’s faculty.

The promotion and tenure process involves a comprehensive review that includes evaluations by department chairs or directors, deans, the provost, and the president.

“The achievement of Promotion and Tenure is a significant celebration for our faculty and the university community,” noted Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Nicole Waters. “It recognizes a faculty member’s commitment to teaching excellence, scholarship, and meaningful engagement in the life of the campus. These accomplishments reflect not only their guidance and mentorship of students but also their leadership in university activities and service. We honor our colleagues whose dedication to excellence in their field, their students, and the institution itself strengthens the foundation of our mission.”

Promotion recognizes a faculty member’s demonstrated excellence and professional growth throughout their career at ��. Promotion and Tenure Recipients

Dr. Mitch Porter – Associate Professor and Tenure

Porter serves as Quality Assurance Coordinator for the College of Education and brings a diverse background in educational research, assessment, and language instruction to his work in higher education. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in English and Foreign Languages from the University of Idaho, a Master of Arts in Linguistics from California State University Long Beach, and a Ph.D. in Educational Research and Assessment from The University of Alabama, where his dissertation focused on developing and validating a vignette-based academic grit scale. Prior to joining ��, Porter held teaching, curriculum development, and assessment positions in both the United States and China, including appointments at The University of Alabama, Full Sail University, Beijing Language and Culture University, and the National Education Examination Authority in China. His scholarly interests include quantitative methodology, psychometrics, assessment development, educational psychology, and non-cognitive skills. He has presented research at national conferences, including the American Educational Research Association, and has contributed to publications focused on educational measurement and student success.

Dr. Aaron Rice – Professor and Tenure

Rice also serves as chair of the Department of Music, where he has led significant growth and innovation since assuming the department chair role in 2022. Under his leadership, the department expanded by more than 30 percent between 2022 and 2024 through strategic recruitment and program development efforts, earning him the University’s Faculty Rising Star Award in 2025. An accomplished choral conductor, educator, and church musician, Rice has held previous faculty and leadership positions at Shorter University and Chowan University and has prepared ensembles for performances at prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall. He also serves as Coordinator of Music and Worship Leadership Studies at �� and as Minister of Music at First Baptist Church in Lincolnton, North Carolina, where he combines academic expertise with practical ministry leadership. Active in the American Choral Directors Association and committed to mentoring future musicians and worship leaders, Rice holds a Doctor of Musical Arts in Church Music with a concentration in Choral Conducting from Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, a Master of Music in Sacred Music from East Carolina University, and bachelor’s degrees in Biblical Studies and Comprehensive Music from Southeastern College at Wake Forest.

Mischia Taylor – Associate Professor and Tenure

Taylor also serves as Dean of the Godbold College of Business, where she combines academic leadership with extensive professional experience in business, sales, and higher education administration. A three-time �� graduate, Taylor earned a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration, an MBA, and a Master Plus in Marketing from the University before completing her Doctor of Business Administration at Saint Leo University. She teaches a wide range of courses, including Principles of Marketing, Consumer Behavior, Advertising and Promotion, Market Research, International Marketing, and Business, Faith & Ethics. Her research interests focus on consumer behavior, entrepreneurship, sustainability, and internships and career placement. Prior to her current role, Taylor served as ��’s Director of Admissions and as Vice President of Sales for Playground Safety Services, Inc. Committed to serving both the University and the broader community, she is involved with organizations including Leadership Cleveland County, the American Red Cross, and the Cleveland County Junior Charity League. Her contributions have been recognized with the President’s Award for Community Engagement, reflecting her dedication to student success, community partnerships, and business education.

Dr. Aihua Zhang – Associate Professor and Tenure

Zhang is a scholar of modern China, East Asian history, women and gender studies, transnationalism, and global history. Before joining ��, she served as a visiting assistant professor at Stockton University. Zhang earned a Ph.D. from the State University of New York at Stony Brook, an M.A. in History from Bowling Green State University, and a B.A. in English from Northwestern Polytechnic University in Xi’an, China. An accomplished researcher, she is the author of The Beijing Young Women’s Christian Association, 1927–1937: Materializing a Gendered Modernity (Lexington Books, 2021), the first full-length study of the YWCA in a Chinese city, and has published extensively on women’s history, gender, citizenship, leisure culture, and social change in modern China. At ��, she teaches courses including Pre-modern Chinese History, Modern China, Chinese Culture, Revolution and Democracy in East Asia, East Asian Traditions and Culture, World Civilizations, and Histories of Feminism, helping students develop a global understanding of historical and cultural issues.

Dr. Tina Lewis – Associate Professor

Lewis, DNP, FNP-C, ACHPN, CEN, is a dedicated nurse educator and clinician, who brings extensive experience across a variety of healthcare settings, including urgent care, inpatient palliative care, trauma and emergency nursing, home health, emergency management, and healthcare leadership. A �� alumna, she earned both her Bachelor of Science in Nursing and Master of Science in Nursing-Family Nurse Practitioner degrees from the University before completing her Doctor of Nursing Practice at Frontier Nursing University. Throughout her career, she has maintained multiple professional certifications, including Family Nurse Practitioner, Advanced Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse, Certified Emergency Nurse, and Certified Medical Examiner for the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Active in numerous professional organizations, including the American Nurses Association, American Association of Nurse Practitioners, Emergency Nurses Association, and Hospice & Palliative Nurses Association, Lewis is committed to advancing nursing education, clinical excellence, and the preparation of future nurse leaders.

Stacie Smith – Assistant Professor

Smith is dedicated to helping students in the Department of Natural Sciences build a strong foundation in the life sciences. A �� alumna, Smith earned her Bachelor of Science degree from the University before completing a Master of Science degree at Frostburg State University. Her primary area of academic interest is Anatomy and Physiology, and she teaches courses including Human Biology and Anatomy & Physiology. Through her commitment to student learning and hands-on scientific education, Smith helps prepare students for success in healthcare, science-related professions, and advanced study in the biological sciences.

Harley Buff Discovers New Strengths Through Leadership, Faith and Community at ��

By Embracing Theater, Communications and Service, Student Pursues Goals with Confidence

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The first time Harley Buff, of Hickory, N.C., heard about ��, she was immediately drawn to the school’s size and Christian mission. After meeting GWU Admissions Counselor Reilly Morgan at a college fair hosted by her high school, Buff’s interest grew, prompting her to schedule a campus visit and experience the University firsthand.

“The small campus and Christian environment were super enticing to me, and I fell in love with it as soon as I got to campus,” Buff shared. “The community at �� is definitely one of my favorite aspects of the University. For me personally, it was really important to go to a smaller Christian school where I could find a community that is Christ-loving and Christ-centered.”

She added that the campus is a perfect size. “It’s really hard to even walk to your class without saying, ‘Hi,’ to a friend or someone that you know,” Buff observed. “It just makes the whole place feel like a home.”

That sense of belonging has encouraged Buff to embrace new opportunities, develop new skills and discover new passions. “To me, the phrase ‘Become More’ means to explore yourself and find new interests, new hobbies, new skills and new talents from who you already are,” Buff said.

Having been involved in theater since she was a child, Buff is pursuing a double major in theater arts and communications with a concentration in public relations. She arrived at �� looking for ways to combine her longtime passion for the stage with professional opportunities behind the scenes. “By doing both of those majors, I’m getting to figure out the entire world of theater, which is something that I’ve always had a passion for,” she reflected.

Through her involvement across campus and service as a leader, Buff said she has developed confidence in ways she never expected. One of the first ways she challenged herself to step outside her comfort zone was by joining the Office of Admissions as a Student Recruitment Ambassador. The role gave her an opportunity to meet prospective students, share her �� experience and build confidence as a communicator.

“I wanted to put myself out there socially, and I thought this was a great way to do that,” she stated. “I saw what a special school �� is, and I wanted to be able to talk to high school juniors and seniors and encourage them to make the decision to become a Bulldog. I feel like I have grown in my confidence to talk to random strangers and to put myself out there in front of large crowds.”

The communication and leadership skills Buff developed while working in admissions complement what she is learning in class from dedicated faculty members who want to see their students succeed. “I truly believe one of the best parts about �� is the faculty,” she asserted. “My professors have been exceptional in teaching me both the course material as well as life skills and lessons.”

She especially appreciates the mentorship of Professor of Theater Arts Dr. Christopher Nelson, who also directs campus productions. “He has always supported me in everything, including coming to a show I was a part of in my hometown, an hour away from him,” Buff said. “I really appreciate his care for us as his students and his passion to teach us more about this art we are all so passionate about.”

Recently, Buff gained hands-on experience in both fields through an internship with Hickory Community Theatre, the place where her love of theater first began as a child. She returned to assist with public relations efforts, prepare website content and patron mailings, work events, support box office operations and help with production-related responsibilities.

“�� is good at getting you that real-world experience and doing more than just pen and paper on a test,” Buff said. “They’re trying to get you immersed in what it’s actually going to be like to work in your field. We’ve had choreographers come in and show us what it would be like for an audition. We’ve had people coming in to help us with songs or with our monologues. And the professors were interested and involved in my internship process. They were all super helpful and there for me as I started the process.”

In addition to working as an SRA, Buff sought other ways to become involved and serve others. One of her first stops as a new student was the Connect Fair, an event that showcases GWU clubs and organizations, as well as community groups. Buff was drawn to the information table for Delight, a national ministry for college women. “I saw that there was an opening on the leadership team, and I had never even been to it,” Buff recalled. “When I visited their table, I just felt like that was something I wanted to be a part of. The girls were all so amazing. They were all so welcoming, and that’s been such a great experience.”

She also helped to start the Backstage Bulldogs theater club. “It’s only been around for a semester, and we’ve won many awards,” Buff said. “We won Club of the Year, which was so awesome for us. But that’s been really great to be in leadership within my major and a community that means a lot to me personally.”

She serves on the Inter-Club Council and as a Peer Leader for the Honors University Life Class. “I feel confident in all of these roles, because I know that my leaders have trained me and prepared me for them, and I know I can always lean on them when I need it,” she noted. “My leadership roles have taught me how important it is to have a team. Having other leaders that can help and support you and those you are leading is so critical, and I’ve definitely learned that over the past year.”

As she looks toward the future, Buff sees both of her academic disciplines playing a role in her career. “I love the combination of theatre arts and communications,” Buff shared. “I genuinely have a love and passion for both subjects so getting to be fully immersed in them has just been so much fun.”

Considering all she has gained personally, academically and professionally, Buff believes the relationships she has built have been the most meaningful part of her journey. “I’ve met some people that I know will be lifelong friends of mine—people I will see at my wedding or see in the future or who will hold my future kids,” Buff affirmed. “And it’s really special that I was able to do that just by going to college.”

Teaching Excellence Award Recipient Dr. Paula Qualls Challenges Community to ‘Cultivate Good Soil’ While University Honors Top Students and Scholars

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—The �� community celebrated the formal opening of the academic year with Fall Convocation on Aug. 19. Led by Provost and Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Nicole Waters, the program celebrated scholastic achievement, recognized scholarship recipients and featured remarks by Professor of Religious Studies Dr. Paula Qualls, the 2025 recipient of the Excellence in Teaching Award.

After the invocation by Vice President for Christian Life and Service and University Chaplain Dr. Josh Parrott, Waters opened the ceremony by introducing the deans of the College of Arts and Sciences, Dr. Robert Prickett; Godbold College of Business, Dr. Mischia Taylor; College of Education, Dr. Prince Bull; and College of Health Sciences, Dr. Tracy Arnold. After the introductions, Waters noted. “Together, these colleges represent the breadth and depth of our university’s academic life. Their faculty will teach you, mentor you, and model what it means to live out your calling. May your time within these colleges spark curiosity, inspire innovation, and guide you in using your God-given talents to serve a greater purpose.”

�� President Nate Evans introduced Qualls, who also won the Excellence in Teaching Award in 2008. The recognition represents the highest honor bestowed upon a �� faculty member and is especially meaningful because it reflects the voices of both colleagues and students.

Qualls has served �� for 26 years. “Her students describe her with words such as compassionate, encouraging, positive and inspiring,” Evans shared. “They speak of a professor who makes difficult material meaningful, creates a welcoming environment for learning, and takes the time to know and care for each student as an individual. Perhaps the greatest testament to her work, however, is found in the students who describe themselves as changed by her influence—not only as learners, but as people.”

Qualls began her speech by reflecting on memorable teachers portrayed in films such as “Dead Poets Society,” “Mr. Holland’s Opus,” and “School of Rock,” noting that great teachers recognize potential, inspire growth, and help students become their best selves. She said these stories resonate because impactful teachers communicate a powerful message to their students: “You have value. You have potential. I believe in you. You matter.” Qualls then connected those examples to what she described as the greatest teacher of all, Jesus Christ, whose teachings have transformed countless lives throughout history and continue to challenge people to change how they think, live, and serve others.

Using Jesus’ Parable of the Sower from Matthew 13, Qualls urged members of the �� community to nurture their spiritual, intellectual, physical, and social well-being through prayer, learning, healthy habits, and meaningful relationships. She reminded students that a new academic year offers an opportunity for a fresh start and challenged them to make the most of their time and potential. “We can all cultivate good soil and be transformed,” she noted. “We can make choices to have a good year, to make every day count. Carpe Diem… Seize the day, friends. Make your lives extraordinary. Cultivate good soil. Run the risk, and gain everything!”

After Qualls’ address, members of the University Concert Choir, directed by Associate Professor of Music Dr. Joshua Cheney, led the audience in singing the �� alma mater. The convocation also highlighted ��’s commitment to academic excellence, Christian faith, and student integrity. The ceremony opened with an invocation by Dr. Josh Parrott, vice president for Christian Life and Service and University chaplain, and included the presentation of the University’s Honor Code by Student Body President Bethany Durham. Academic achievement was recognized by Waters through the presentation of Scholastic Academic Awards, which honor students with the highest GPAs after one, two and three years of study, while Evans recognized recipients of ��’s premier scholarships.
