Faculty Awards, New Faculty Introductions, and a Vision for ‘ONE Webb’ Mark the Start of the 2026-27 Academic Year

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� celebrated excellence in teaching, scholarship, service, and mentorship during its annual Faculty Assembly on Aug. 11. Leading the list of honorees was Dr. Jeff Hartman, professor and internship coordinator in the Department of Exercise Science, who received the University’s highest faculty honor, the Excellence in Teaching Award. The annual gathering also welcomed new faculty members and marked the beginning of the 2026-27 academic year.

Held in the Tucker Student Center, the assembly brought faculty together for worship, professional development, recognition of outstanding achievement, and a shared commitment to student success.

“As full-time faculty members, you are entrusted with educating and supporting our students,” said Dr. Nicole Waters, provost and vice president of Academic Affairs. “Through your teaching, mentoring, advising, and service, you help prepare them to use their God-given talents in their personal and professional lives.”

Reflecting ��’s commitment to being Christ-centered, the Faculty Assembly began with a devotion from Dr. Jim McConell, interim dean of the School of Divinity. Members of the Faculty Assembly Choir, under the direction of Dr. Cal Robertson, professor of biblical studies, led faculty and staff in a worship song and also offered a choral selection. Accompaniment was provided by Robertson on the guitar and Timothy Scruggs, �� Department of Music staff accompanist.

During his presidential address, �� President Nate Evans highlighted the University’s progress over the past year, discussed key institutional priorities, and outlined a vision for the future. Framed by the theme “ONE Webb,” his remarks emphasized ��’s commitment to being Christ-Centered, Student-Focused, and Excellence-Driven.

“I am excited to begin a new academic year and grateful for the faculty who make the �� experience so meaningful,” Evans said. “Their investment in our students is central to who we are, and I look forward to what we will accomplish together as ONE Webb.”

Excellence in Teaching Award – Dr. Jeff Hartman

The Excellence in Teaching Award was presented to Dr. Jeff Hartman, professor and internship coordinator in the Department of Exercise Science. Considered one of ��’s most prestigious faculty honors, the award recognizes exceptional teaching, academic rigor, innovation, mentorship, and commitment to the University’s mission.

Faculty members must have completed at least five years of full-time teaching service at �� to be eligible for the award. Candidates are nominated by peers, endorsed by their department chair, and evaluated through feedback and scoring from both faculty and students. The recipient also receives a $1,000 cash prize and the opportunity to address the University community during fall convocation.

Hartman was recognized for helping students connect classroom learning to professional practice while mentoring students in research and scholarship. He has guided eight exercise science students in publishing scholarly articles as undergraduates and has played a significant role in preparing students for internships and professional careers through experiential learning opportunities.

Scholarship Faculty Award – Dr. Josh Vadeboncoeur

The Scholarship Faculty Award was presented to Dr. Josh Vadeboncoeur, assistant professor of sport management. The award recognizes excellence in research and scholarly contribution through publication, presentations, grant activity, and professional recognition.

Vadeboncoeur’s scholarship focuses on motorsports and the intersections of culture and race. His 2025 book, “Racing to Make Space: Black Fans in NASCAR’s Fast Lane,” along with numerous peer-reviewed publications and conference presentations, has established him as a growing voice in sport management scholarship.

Etta Curtis and J.D. Huggins Faculty Service Award – Dr. David Campbell

The Etta Curtis and J.D. Huggins Faculty Service Award was awarded to Dr. David Campbell, professor of geology.

Campbell was recognized for his sustained service to the University. During his five-year tenure as chair of the Department of Natural Sciences, Campbell helped guide the creation of a new biochemistry major, led the department’s five-year review process, and supported curriculum improvements. Beyond campus, he has shared his expertise through science education initiatives, international paleontology presentations, fossil identification workshops, and astronomy events that engage students and community members alike.

Mentoring and Academic Advising Faculty Award – Dr. LaDonna Clark

The Mentoring and Academic Advising Faculty Award was presented to Dr. LaDonna Clark, assistant professor, principal faculty member, and director of clinical education in the Department of Physician Assistant (PA) Studies.

In addition to advising graduate PA students, Clark mentors aspiring healthcare professionals through outreach programs, health fairs, and educational events. As director of the program’s Capstone course, she helps students develop skills in research, evidence-based medicine, scientific communication, and professional presentation that prepare them for successful healthcare careers.

The honor reflects Clark’s student-centered approach to advising and mentorship, her commitment to supporting graduate and pre-physician assistant students, and the professional development opportunities she creates through healthcare outreach and experiential learning.

Nancy Francis-Gregg Day Adjunct Award – Jessica Sherman

The Nancy Francis-Gregg Day Adjunct Award was awarded to Jessica Sherman, adjunct clinical instructor in the Hunt School of Nursing.

Sherman was recognized for creating a supportive clinical learning environment where students gain confidence while developing critical nursing skills. Student evaluations reflected her impact, with students praising her individualized feedback, encouragement, and commitment to helping future nurses transition successfully from the classroom to professional practice. Specifically, students cited her ability to build confidence and strengthen clinical skills.

Rising Star Faculty Award – Dr. Angel Queen

The Rising Star Faculty Award was presented to Dr. Angel Queen, assistant professor and chair of undergraduate nursing programs in the Hunt School of Nursing.

Queen was honored for exceptional promise and achievement in teaching, scholarship, service, and leadership. She has emerged as a leader within the Hunt School of Nursing through her work in curriculum development, student retention initiatives, scholarship, and community engagement. Among her accomplishments is the creation of NURS 200: Nursing Essentials, a course designed to strengthen student success and support nursing students throughout their academic journey.

Graduate Faculty Awards

Adjunct Award – Dr. Kristen Edwards

The Graduate Faculty Award for Adjunct Faculty was presented to Dr. Kristin Edwards, instructor in the Master of Arts in Instructional Technology program. Students consistently praised Edwards for her exceptional organization, clear communication, timely feedback, and unwavering commitment to helping them succeed.

Through her teaching, Edwards has earned a reputation for creating a supportive and well-structured learning environment that helps graduate students navigate complex coursework while balancing professional and personal responsibilities. Students highlighted her responsiveness, attention to detail, and dedication to helping them achieve their academic goals, describing her as a faculty member who invests deeply in their success.

Faculty Award – Dr. Denise Patterson

The Graduate Faculty Award was presented to Dr. Denise Patterson of the College of Education. Students commended Patterson for challenging them to excellence while providing mentorship, encouragement, and practical preparation for leadership roles beyond the classroom.

Students cited Patterson’s ability to connect theory to professional practice, helping them apply what they learn in meaningful ways both within and beyond their current roles. They also praised her mentorship and supportive approach, noting her commitment to preparing graduate students to become effective leaders and educators while maintaining high academic expectations.

Gardner‑Webb Names Jeff Cogburn Vice President for Advancement

Seasoned Advancement Leader Brings Proven Fundraising and Engagement Experience to the University

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Gardner‑Webb University has announced the appointment of Jeff Cogburn as vice president for Advancement, effective June 8. Cogburn brings more than a decade of progressive experience in higher education advancement, campaign strategy, alumni engagement, and philanthropy. He will lead the University’s comprehensive efforts to deepen relationships and grow philanthropic support.

In this role, Cogburn will serve as Gardner‑Webb’s chief advancement officer, leading the University’s fundraising, alumni engagement, and advancement services efforts. He will also oversee corporate and foundation relations, major and planned giving, athletics‑related fundraising, and future capital campaign preparation. He will also serve as a member of the President’s Cabinet and work closely with the Board of Trustees, alumni, donors, and campus partners to advance the mission and long‑term goals of the University.

“Jeff is an accomplished advancement professional who brings both the experience and energy to lead our advancement efforts forward,” affirmed �� President Nate Evans. “He has a clear passion for connecting people to purpose, and his ability to build meaningful relationships and inspire engagement will be critical as we continue to advance the mission of the University. We are excited to welcome Jeff and his family to the �� community.”

Cogburn joins Gardner‑Webb during a period of strong philanthropic momentum and institutional growth. He was drawn to the opportunity to lead a fully integrated advancement operation at a defining moment in the University’s trajectory, bringing together strategy, relationships, and execution to support students and advance Gardner‑Webb’s mission.

“Gardner‑Webb has real momentum, and that’s a credit to the alumni, parents, donors, supporters, and advancement professionals who have built a strong foundation,” Cogburn highlighted. “At its core, advancement is about people. Every relationship we build and every dollar we raise should create opportunity for students and strengthen their experience.”

Most recently, Cogburn served as assistant vice chancellor of Alumni Affairs in the Division of Advancement at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga (UTC), where he led alumni engagement and annual giving strategies that contributed to two consecutive record‑setting fundraising years. Under his leadership, UTC experienced a 212% increase in total dollars raised, a 25% growth in total donors, and a 40% increase in alumni engagement, leading the University of Tennessee System in percentage to goal.

At UTC, Cogburn served as a senior advancement leader during a chancellor transition, helping maintain alignment and momentum amid evolving institutional priorities. He partnered closely with development, advancement services, communications, foundation leadership, and intercollegiate athletics to strengthen engagement, stewardship, and institutional visibility. He also provided executive leadership for alumni engagement, annual giving operations, budgets, and alumni board governance, while collaborating with senior leadership on campaign planning and major gift strategy.

Previously, Cogburn held several advancement leadership roles at Clemson University in South Carolina. His roles included chief development officer and unit lead for the College of Education. In that role, he served on the college leadership team, managed a comprehensive donor portfolio, and partnered with faculty and academic leadership to align philanthropic priorities with institutional strategy. He also served as co‑chair for the Scholarship Pillar of Clemson’s $1.889 billion Fiercely Forward campaign, advancing student access, affordability, and scholarship investment.

Earlier in his career, Cogburn served at East Tennessee State University (ETSU) in Johnson City. There, he helped co‑found the institution’s first coordinated annual giving program, establishing sustainable donor pipelines and comprehensive solicitation strategies. His experience spanned alumni engagement, annual giving, parent philanthropy, major gifts, advancement operations, and board partnership.

Cogburn holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s degree in business administration from ETSU. He is currently pursuing an Ed.D. in leadership and professional practice at the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

A recognized leader in the advancement profession, Cogburn has received multiple honors, including the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) Excellence in Fundraising Award and the Circle of Excellence and District III Best of District Awards from the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE). He is a frequent presenter on advancement strategy, alumni engagement, and governance.

As ��’s Vice President for Advancement, Cogburn’s initial focus will be on listening and learning—building trust, strengthening alignment, and continuing to foster a strong culture of philanthropy across campus. “‘One Webb’ is more than a phrase; it’s how the work gets done,” Cogburn emphasized. “When the president, board of trustees, cabinet, alumni, and campus partners are aligned with shared purpose, advancement is positioned to be most effective. I’m excited to build on the strong foundation already in place and help position Gardner‑Webb for long‑term success, including future campaign opportunities.”

Cogburn also expressed appreciation for the leadership of Interim Vice President of Advancement Karen Bruce during the advancement transition and shared his enthusiasm for joining an energized and committed team.

“From my first visit, it was clear that Gardner‑Webb is a special place,” he expressed. “The authenticity of the people, the student experience, and the integration of faith and learning stood out immediately. I’m grateful for the opportunity to be part of what comes next—for the University and for my family.”

Nathaniel J. Evans Officially Inaugurated as ��’s 14th President

Investiture Ceremony Affirms Christ‑Centered Mission and Shared Vision for the University’s Future

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—��’s 14th president, Nathaniel J. Evans, was formally sworn into his office on April 24, 2026. The program was held at 10:15 a.m. in Lutz-Yelton Convocation Center. Board of Trustees Chair the Rev. Dr. M. Lamont Littlejohn Jr. presided over the investiture ceremony.

“Today, we gather as a community of faith, learning, and service,” Littlejohn stated. “We are confident that the leadership being installed today will continue to strengthen the legacy of ��—building upon the foundation laid by those who have served before, while guiding this institution toward new opportunities for growth, innovation, and impact.”

Evans officially took office at �� on Nov. 11, 2025, after a competitive national search led by Littlejohn. “It was my pleasure to serve as the chair of the Presidential Search Committee,” he reflected. “I am grateful to that committee for their hard work and dedication to the process of finding a new president to lead our beloved institution.”

Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Nicole Waters welcomed attendees and led the program. She introduced podium guests and recognized former �� presidents who were present for the ceremony: Dr. Christopher White, Dr. A. Frank Bonner and former Interim President Dr. Ben Leslie.

Vice President and University Chaplain for Christian Life and Service Dr. Josh Parrott offered the invocation. Dr. Aaron M. Rice, chair of the Department of Music, led the audience in singing the hymn: “Holy, Holy, Holy.” Interim dean of the M. Christopher White School of Divinity Dr. Jim McConnell said the closing prayer.

Greetings were offered by Student Body President Andrea Stampone, Faculty Chair Dr. Cal Robertson, Vice President for Athletics Brendan Fahey, Big South Conference Commissioner Sherika Montgomery, a GWU alumna, and North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities President A. Hope Williams.

Evans began his inaugural address with a spirit of thanksgiving. “First, I want to thank my Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ—not only for this opportunity—but for each of you, and for this institution, this mission field we call ��,” he reflected.

He also expressed appreciation for his wife, Brittany, his parents and friends, Littlejohn and members of the Board of Trustees, faculty, staff, and students. He thanked Executive Assistant to the President Stephanie Stearns and the inauguration steering committee for their leadership in planning the program and celebration.

“Today is not about a ceremony or speeches or any one person. It is about a chapter in a much larger and enduring story, built on the faith, the sacrifice, and the shoulders of those who came before us,” Evans affirmed. “And today, we are entrusted with carrying it forward. Gardner‑Webb is, and will remain, a Christ‑centered university. We will be focused in our priorities, disciplined in our decisions, and bold in our ambition.”

Evans also pointed to the University’s “Become More” vision as a guiding expression of its mission—calling students to grow in Christ, in knowledge, and in purpose. He emphasized that this shared purpose unites faculty, staff, students, alumni, and partners as “One Webb.”

“So, if you are looking for something to believe in, something to invest your time, your talent, and your trust in, bet on us. Bet on ��,” Evans emphasized. “This is our chapter to write. And I am honored to be with you as we write it—grounded in our mission, confident in our future, and committed to the work we are called to do together. The future of �� is bright, and I look forward to all that we will accomplish—together.”

As part of the ceremony, Evans was bestowed the President’s Medallion, which he will wear around his neck at commencements and other important ceremonial occasions. Littlejohn explained that its weight symbolizes the responsibility carried by all who serve in this role, while its design—a replica of the University Seal—represents the community the president serves.

Evans earned his bachelor’s in exercise sports science with a minor in biology from East Carolina University (ECU). He holds Master of Science degree in Human Resource Management from Western Carolina University.

Prior to his appointment as president at ��, he began his career in admissions at ECU before transitioning to advancement and serving as a major gifts officer for ECU’s Honors College. In 2020, Evans became ��’s vice president for Advancement. Before his career in higher education, Evans served as an officer in the U.S. Air Force.

His wife, Brittany, is a �� alumna and a visiting assistant professor in the College of Education.

Celebrating Women Who Lead: A Gardner Webb Women’s History Month Series

Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs Nicole Waters Highlights the Influence of Mentors and the Importance of Women’s Leadership

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Women’s History Month honors the mothers, mentors, and history‑makers who shaped lives and opened doors for generations. At Gardner‑Webb University, that legacy continues through the women who lead across campus, including five members of the GWU president’s cabinet. Throughout the month, they will share their stories, reflecting on the opportunities women have today and those who guided them along the way.

Today’s column is by Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs Nicole Waters.

Career highlights:

15 years in higher education: joined the faculty of the Hunt School of Nursing (HSON) at �� in 2011 and has served as a program chair, associate dean, and later served as its dean. She has also served as dean of the College of Health Sciences.

Waters reflects on celebrating women’s history.

Women’s History Month is a meaningful time to celebrate the accomplishments and significant contributions of women. It offers an opportunity to reflect on the past, recognize the impact of women today, and inspire the generations who will lead the future.

Throughout my professional journey, I have been inspired and influenced by both women and men whose leadership, mentorship, and example have made a lasting impact on me. Dr. Sharon Starr (former dean, Hunt School of Nursing and associate provost for College of Health Sciences) provided a strong example of women’s leadership in action. Her guidance and example were both meaningful and influential during my time working with her.

Likewise, during the time I worked with Dr. Ben Leslie (former provost and executive vice president of Academic Affairs) he consistently supported and advocated for women leadership. He allowed an opportunity for women leaders on campus to be involved in a structured Women In Leadership (WIL) community. Because of his support in allowing this community of women leaders to meet regularly, the experiences had a lasting positive impact on me and provided an important network of encouragement, support, and shared learning.

I intentionally support other women by being present and accessible, building meaningful relationships, and engaging in individual conversations are important aspects of supporting and mentoring others. Being intentional about sharing knowledge and experiences creates opportunities for growth. We all learn from one another, and when we take the time to share and genuinely care, everyone benefits.

The one piece of advice I hope young women carry with them beyond �� is to be your authentic self, represent well, and be prepared to lead, influence, and co-create change. Never stop learning.

Interim Vice President of Advancement Karen Bruce Reflects on Opportunity, Calling, and Stewardship

Today’s reflection is from Interim Vice President for Advancement Karen Bruce.

Career highlights:

More than 20 years of leadership experience across Christian higher education, nonprofit organizations, and corporate environments.
Previously served in leadership roles at Faulkner University, Montgomery, Ala.
Master of Science in Organizational Management and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration Management from Peru State College.

Bruce shares her thoughts on Women’s History Month.

There was a time when women in America were not given the opportunities they have today. I sometimes struggle to imagine what my life might have looked like if I had been born 10, 15, or even 20 years earlier. Personally, I am grateful that I have the opportunity to use the gifts and talents the Lord has given me for His purpose—even when that purpose doesn’t fit neatly into the traditional careers that were often encouraged for women when I was a young girl.

Women’s History Month reminds me that many of the opportunities we have today exist because of the courage, perseverance, and faith of the women who came before us as well as the men and women who opened the doors for others to walk through.

My life has been filled with both men and women who have inspired, encouraged, and advocated for the future I enjoy today. One woman in particular has inspired me, though I never met her and very little is written about her.

Her name is Sheerah. Scripture tells us that she was the great-granddaughter of Joseph, the granddaughter of Ephraim, and the daughter of Beriah. In 1 Chronicles 7, tucked within a genealogy, we learn that she was the woman who built three cities.

We know almost nothing about her life, yet God chose to record her name and her accomplishment in Scripture. As I have reflected on what her life might have been like, I have found great inspiration in her story. It reminds me that faithful work—even when it seems quiet or unnoticed—can have lasting impact.

When I first arrived at ��, there were two women serving on the university’s Cabinet. Today, there are five. That change is more than numbers—it reflects opportunity, balance, and representation.

It is especially meaningful when you consider that more than 60% of ��’s student body is female. Having women in key leadership positions is part of the guidance and formation we provide as a university community. We want our students to see women modeling leadership, service, and stewardship in ways that help them imagine the opportunities they themselves may pursue in the future.

For female students, employees, and future leaders, it sends a clear message that �� is a place where women are valued, where their voices matter, and where they can grow into positions of leadership and influence. When students see women leading with integrity, faith, and excellence, it expands their vision of what God may be calling them to do in the world.

Mentoring relationships with students, faculty or staff are incredibly meaningful to me, and each one is unique. For some, I am simply a friend or a sounding board when they need someone to listen. For others, I may be an encourager—recognizing their strengths and urging them to build on the gifts they’ve been given.

Sometimes my role is to be a prayer partner, bringing their challenges, obstacles, and hopes—even their deepest goals—to a Father who already knows the path He has for them. And in other moments, it may be as simple as opening a door, making an introduction, or helping them see possibilities they may not yet see for themselves.

One piece of advice I hope young women will carry with them beyond �� is this: Do not be afraid to use the gifts God has given you. Your path may not always look like the one that others expect, but faithfulness to your calling will always matter more than fitting into someone else’s definition of success. Seek wise counsel, work diligently, and trust that the Lord can use your gifts in ways far greater than you can imagine.

Phillip Lewis Returns to �� as Associate Vice President for Web & Digital Communications

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� Vice President for Marketing and Communications Thea Thompson has named Phillip Lewis as the University’s associate vice president for Web & Digital Communications. He brings more than 15 years of experience in website management, digital content strategy, and online communications, including previous service as GWU’s senior web developer and positions with major organizations across the Charlotte region. In his new role at ��, Lewis will lead a team of professionals in managing the main University website, social media channels, and email communication

“As higher education continues to evolve, our digital presence plays a critical role in how prospective students and families discover and engage with ��,” Thompson stated. “Phillip brings the experience, technical expertise, and strategic perspective needed to lead that work, along with a deep understanding of our mission and what makes this university distinctive. Having worked with him previously, I’m excited to welcome him back and confident his leadership will help strengthen our digital presence and support ��’s continued growth.”

Most recently, Lewis served as senior digital marketing manager for AvidXchange, where he oversaw the company’s main website, worked closely with departments across the organization, and helped guide its overall online presence.

Before that, as Gardner‑Webb’s senior web developer, he ensured the University’s website remained accurate, user‑friendly, and aligned with institutional goals. He also supported major projects, including the design of the University’s capital campaign website.

“I’m grateful for the opportunity to return to �� and support its mission and vision,” Lewis affirmed. “I look forward to collaborating with colleagues across campus to help advance the university’s goals as we work to move this wonderful institution forward.”

Earlier in his career, Lewis spent more than a decade with the Charlotte Regional Business Alliance (formerly the Charlotte Chamber), where he managed the organization’s websites, led several major redesigns, supported marketing initiatives, and developed online tools to serve businesses across the region.

He also brings a strong foundation in graphic design, creating visual concepts for websites, marketing materials, digital campaigns, and other projects. This creative background enhances his ability to pair clear communication with strong visual presentation.

Lewis earned bachelor’s degrees in communications with a concentration in marketing and English literature from Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C. His career reflects a commitment to helping organizations communicate effectively and connect audiences with the information they need.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Vice President for Finance and Administration R. Thomas Welch has named Brian Speer as associate vice president of Facilities Operations. Speer previously served as the director of Operations Administration. In his new role, Speer will collaborate with various campus departments to elevate the student experience both inside and outside the classroom.

“We know that learning and the collegiate experience are only fully attainable when students feel accepted, safe, and comfortable,” Welch asserted. “Facilities Operations and its leadership are vital to providing this environment for our community. This decision reflects our commitment to choosing a leader who embraces the charge to make GWU a family—a home for our students—and an exceptional place to gain skills and knowledge for the next steps in life.”

As associate vice president of Facilities Operations, Speer’s responsibilities include managing the areas of housekeeping, maintenance, event services, occupational safety, and the University’s grounds.

“More than anything, I want Christ to shine through in everything I do—in my leadership of the Operations staff, in interactions with students, staff, and faculty, and in partnerships with vendors and contractors,” Speer shared. “I want to be both a quarterback and cheerleader for our Operations team. I want the Operations employees to be recognized for the vital positions they hold. They are an amazing team of individuals, and I want to help them experience joy and purpose in the work they do here at GWU.”

He continued, “While there is much to learn, I ask the Lord for wisdom on how to lead like Christ in this new position. My heart is what Paul shared with the Colossians, ‘Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the inheritance as your reward. You are serving the Lord Christ.’” (Col. 3:23-24)

Speer joined the �� staff in May 2008 as part of Event Services. In December 2008, he became manager of Event Services and established foundational protocols for facility setup and event logistics, managing teams in the preparation and maintenance of 600+ campus venues annually to support academic, athletic, and community programming. In 2010, he became director of Operations Administration, where his role was to manage project pipelines from design through completion, including recent Tucker Student Center renovations, dorm HVAC upgrades, and athletic facility improvements.

Speer has a bachelor’s degree in accounting from UNC-Charlotte and a master’s in Christian education from Southeastern Baptist Theological Seminary in Wake Forest, N.C. He serves as one of the preaching elders at Shepherding Center Ministries, in Gastonia, N.C. He and his wife, Laura, have been married 31 years. They have nine children and five grandchildren.

Arnold Steps into the Permanent Role with a Strong Record of Leadership and Service

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Nicole Waters has announced the appointment of Dr. Tracy Arnold as dean of the College of Health Sciences (CoHS). Arnold has served as interim dean since April 2025 and previously served as CoHS associate dean.

In her new role as dean, Arnold will continue to work closely with faculty and staff to support the college’s ongoing priorities and initiatives. “Dr. Arnold brings a wealth of experience and expertise to this role,” Waters emphasized. “With a background as a dean/director of the Hunt School of Nursing, an associate dean, and an interim dean for the College of Health Sciences, she has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to advancing academic excellence and fostering a supportive environment for faculty, staff, and students. Dr. Arnold’s exceptional organizational and leadership abilities have strengthened the college and positioned it for sustained growth and success. I am confident that her continued leadership will further advance the College of Health Sciences’ mission and provide momentum and strategic direction for the future.”

A native of Sylva, N.C., Arnold is a four-time graduate of ��. She received her Associate Degree in Nursing in 2002, Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) in 2004, Master of Science in Nursing in Nursing Administration in 2006 and Doctor of Nursing Practice in 2012. She worked eight years at CaroMont Health in Gastonia, N.C., in a variety of departments and served various leadership roles. She began as full-time faculty in HSON in 2010 and has served as BSN program and licensure coordinator, chair of pre-licensure nursing programs, associate director, and director.

“I am deeply honored by this appointment and grateful for the confidence and support of President (Nate) Evans, Dr. Waters, and my colleagues across the College of Health Sciences,” Arnold stated. “I also appreciate the leadership of Dr. Waters and the strong foundation she established, which continues to guide and strengthen the work of the College.”

Additionally, Arnold’s accreditation expertise was recognized nationally when she was elected in 2024 to a three-year term on the Board of Commissioners for the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN). Through her voluntary service with ACEN, she has developed extensive knowledge of accreditation processes and standards, serving since 2014 as a peer evaluator, team chair, and member of the Evaluation Review Panel. This experience equips her to provide informed leadership and support for accreditation across all College of Health Sciences programs, encompassing multiple disciplines and accrediting bodies.

Former Web & Digital Marketing Communications Leader Brings Vision and Dedication to New Position

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� President Nate Evans has named Theandra “Thea” Thompson as vice president of Marketing and Communications. Thompson, the former associate vice president of Web & Digital Communications, has served as interim vice president of Marketing since July 1.

As vice president of the Division of Marketing and Communications, Thompson directs a team that promotes the University’s mission and message. They develop engaging content for video, advertising, news and social media sites; provide marketing advice and strategies; produce creative graphic design projects; manage the University’s website; and lead the mascot program.

Evans stated, “Having worked closely with Thea for several years, I have seen firsthand the trust she inspires and the hard work she invests in strengthening ��’s message and mission. She approaches every challenge with professionalism, creativity, and a deep commitment to the University. Thea has earned the respect of colleagues across campus, and I am confident she will provide strong, strategic leadership for our marketing and communications efforts in the years ahead.”

While serving as interim, Thompson and her team have continued to strengthen the University’s brand, enhance and implement communication strategies and work to facilitate additional partnerships across campus. Thompson also worked closely with the Marketing and Communications team to lead the strategic development of a University brand campaign scheduled for launch in 2026.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve �� in this role, and I want to thank President Evans for his trust and support,” Thompson asserted. “�� has been my home for the past five years, and I care deeply about the people and the mission that shape this University. Thompson’s dedication during her interim term has laid a strong foundation for the next chapter in ��’s marketing and communications efforts. “As we move forward, my focus is on elevating ��’s visibility and ensuring our message reflects the strength, purpose, and heart of this community,” Thompson affirmed. “We have an incredible story to tell, and our talented team plays a central role in sharing it. I am excited to build on our progress and help show the world who we are and who we are becoming.”

Thompson joined the University in January 2020 as associate vice president of Web & Digital Communications. She has managed the University’s transition to a new website, helped create an interactive online map of campus, coordinated the revision of the calendar to include all campus events and academic schedules, and directed the development of a new interactive virtual tour of campus.

Thompson was instrumental in choosing the current live mascot for the University, and has supervised Bo’s care, campus appearances, and social media presence. She has also enhanced the University’s website to align with Webb Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) and implemented a sustainable process for ongoing Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) compliance, including continuous monitoring through a digital accessibility platform and annual reviews conducted by certified experts.

Prior to joining ��, Thompson worked as a digital analyst at Masco Retail Support Services and Food Lion Corporate as a digital engagement specialist for web and mobile app for three years and as digital marketing coordinator for two years.

She completed the HighEdWeb 2023 Leadership Academy in December 2023 and received a certificate in Digital Marketing in 2017 from Rutgers University Executive Education Program. She earned her Bachelor of Science and Master of Business Administration with a concentration in management and marketing from Seton Hall University in South Orange, N.J.

BOILING SPRINGS, N.C.—�� President Nate Evans has named Dr. Nicole Waters as the next provost and vice president for Academic Affairs. Waters has served as interim provost since April, providing skilled guidance during a period of transition while advancing key academic priorities across the University.

President Nate Evans praised Waters’ leadership and long-standing commitment to the University. “Dr. Waters has demonstrated steady, student-centered leadership during a critical season for ��, and I am grateful she has accepted the call to serve as our next provost and vice president for academic affairs,” Evans said. “With more than 14 years of dedicated service to GWU, she brings a deep commitment to academic excellence, a collaborative spirit with faculty and staff, and a sincere passion for helping students discover their calling. I am confident that under her leadership, our academic programs will continue to grow in quality, innovation, and impact as we live out our mission.”

A two-time �� alumna and longtime academic leader, Waters joined the faculty of the Hunt School of Nursing (HSON) in 2011 and has served as a program chair, associate dean, and later served as its dean. She has also served as dean of the College of Health Sciences. As interim provost, she has guided academic planning, supported faculty development and strengthened initiatives that enhance student learning and success.

Reflecting on her appointment, Waters shared her commitment to the university community. “It is an honor to serve as provost and vice president for Academic Affairs, and I am grateful to President Evans for the opportunity to continue this work in a role that allows me to support our faculty, staff and students,” Waters said. “I step into this role grounded in three core commitments: My love for the Lord, my dedication to ��, and my care for the people who make this place a true home. A registered nurse with clinical experience in medical-surgical care, pediatrics, orthopedics and medical missions, Waters was named Great 100 Nurses of North Carolina for 2025. She is an alumna of the National League for Nursing (NLN) LEAD program and the UNC-Chapel Hill BRIDGES Academic Leadership Program.

Waters earned a Doctor of Nursing Practice and a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from ��, a Master of Science in Nursing from Western Carolina University and an associate degree in nursing from Gaston College.
